New Generation Process Refractometer offers Improved Control of Amines in Gas Treating Solutions
Acid gas removal processes use aqueous amine solutions to remove hydrogen
sulphide (H2S) and carbon dioxide (CO2) from gases. In the regeneration process the amine can degrade or be depleted. In order to achieve the proper acid gas removal the optimum amine concentration must be measured and maintained. It is advantageous to ensure the proper amine concentration in order to optimise
the H2S or CO2 removal. The correct amount of amine must be fed to the process as too low amine concentration will affect the absorption efficiency, while too high concentration will form a corrosion risk for the process equipment. The final amine concentration can be controlled by make-up ratio.
The amine concentration is traditionally measured by lab titration; this technique assumes that all alkalinity is due to amine and can give false readings because of the many interferences that are present. Now K-Patents’ (Finland) continuous in-line refractive index measurement provides instant feedback to changes in amine concentrations. K-Patents process refractometer PR-23 determines the concentration of dissolved solids by making an optical measurement of the solution's refractive index. K-Patents PR-23 is not affected by alkalinity or the many other interferences of the process.

Lightweight, Handheld FTIR for Dedicated Field Applications
A2 Technologies (USA) has announced the availability of its newest portable FTIR system, Flexscan. Flexscan is a superior performing, mid IR spectrometer that fits in the palm of one's hand. A2 Technologies now offers two hand-held FTIR systems, Flexscan, for dedicated field analyses, and Exoscan, for lab and field use.
Flexscan is ideal for dedicated applications that require the use of FTIR spectroscopy in out-of-lab settings. Since Flexscan's hand-held optics weigh approximately 3 pounds, its light weight and extremely compact size is perfect for applications that require repetitive analyses on large surfaces, or in locations that are physically restricted. Flexscan is offered with a variety of sampling interfaces including diffuse, grazing angle, ATR and specular reflectance. Thus a broad range of materials can be analyzed including polished or roughened metals, polymers, composites, plastics and most other solids. Scientists and engineers involved in applications including analysis of composites and metals used in aircraft and marine vessels, analysis of minerals or soils, surface coating analysis, analysis of contamination, corrosion or oxidation of surfaces, and in a wide range of research or troubleshooting applications, will find the Flexscan a powerful ally.
Flexscan consists of two parts: an optics module that contains the source, interferometer and detector all optimally coupled with sampling optics; and a power module that contains battery and electronics. The latter module is available either belt-mounted or held by a shoulder strap. The performance of Flexscan rivals or exceeds that of far larger, traditional analytical bench top FTIR spectrometers. This is a result of a patented modulator that has extremely short internal pathlength while retaining a large optical aperture. An important benefit of this design is that the spectrometer is very rugged, making it ideal for out-of-lab use.

A flow rate totaliser specifically designed for computing and displaying flow rates and totals from flowmeters with pulse, sine wave or frequency outputs, has been introduced by flow metering specialist Trimec-Europe (UK). The RT20 Rate Totaliser can be battery or externally powered and features a 6 digit large LCD total, 8 digit cumulative totaliser and 5 digit rate display.
The instrument displays resettable (batch) total, cumulative total and instantaneous flow rate in engineering units as programmed by the user. A robust IP66/67-NEMA 4X aluminium field and panel mountable housing makes the unit suitable for the most rugged applications. It also features a backlit panel enabling distance viewing at night when de-powered.
The RT20 is designed for simple PIN protected flow chart programming with English language prompts guiding users through the programming routine and so reduces the need to refer to the instruction manual. Other features include scaleable universal pulse or frequency inputs, scaled pulse output, long battery life, non-volatile memory and reverse polarity protection. Additional options to suit specific applications include a heavy duty facia protector shield, a relay board with SPDT outputs as well as flowmeter and pipe mount kits. Other units available include battery totalisers, automatic batch controllers and a rate totaliser with 4-20mA, alarm and scaleable outputs, dual flow inputs and linearisation.

New Compact Gauge Valve
Lightweight and compact, Swagelok’s (USA) new compact gauge valve is designed with a smaller footprint and for maximum performance. The design provides quick, convenient access for the isolation and venting of pressure gauges. The valve can be used with Swagelok pressure gauges. The pressure gauges are positionable with tube adapter ends, eliminating threaded connections and leak points.
The smaller, lightweight footprint reduces the need for supports, which place additional stress on a system. A streamlined body features Swagelok tube fitting end connections for leak-tight performance, reduced installation time and cost, plus robust tube grip and vibration resistance.
The design incorporates a purge valve for easy bleeding of trapped fluid pressure between the valve seat and gauge upon shutoff. The purge valve is machined directly onto the body, eliminating potential leak points while allowing the user to safely release the fluid before removing the gauge. A permanently assembled purge cap is crimped to the valve body for operator safety and to prevent accidental disassembly.
“Gauge maintenance can be very time consuming and operators want to avoid unnecessary downtime with their process lines,” said Mike Adkins, product manager, valves for Swagelok Company. “By incorp- orating both an integral purge valve and tube fitting end connections, we are reducing leak potential and installation time for greater efficiency.”
Available with either ½ in. or 12 mm Swagelok tube fitting end connections, the Swagelok compact gauge valve is constructed from 316 stainless steel. The valve is rated for temperatures up to 450°F (232°C) depending on stem and packing. A soft-seat stem with PCTFE stem tip is available, and users can choose from UHMWPE, PFA, or PEEK packing. The valve is rated for pressures up to 4,000 psig (275 bar).
