Enhanced Drinking Water Analysis Using Comprehensive Environmental GC/MS Productivity Solutions

Flexible Sample Adaptor System for i-LAB® Hand Held Analysing Spectrometer

Hand Held Analysing Spectrometer. This new series of i-LAB Sample Adaptors opens up a wide array of visible and NIR range measurement possibilities for i-LAB users. Along with the conventional cuvette and round vials for liquid measurements, the i-LAB Sample Adaptors also allow the i-LAB to conduct surface colour measurements on solids. The i-LAB Hand Held Analysing Spectrometer enables users to conduct rapid testing of solid surfaces and liquids in the process plant, the laboratory, and/or in the field.

MicrOptix Technologies, LLC (USA) has recently launched a new family of Sample Adaptors for the patented i-LAB®

The i-LAB performs real-time measurement and analysis of liquids and solids in the visible light range from 400–700 nanometers. An NIR version is scheduled to be released in early 2010. The product utilises the company’s patented, integrated sensing system that enables spectrometer quality measurements in a hand held compact package. The i-LAB is highly energy efficient as it uses LED’s as a light source and is powered by 3 AA batteries. The i-LAB Surface Reader (V255) Adaptor allows for solid surface (reflectance) measurements for solid samples 6mm round and larger. The i-LAB Surface Reader Adaptor can be used to measure solid colors using the CIE L*a*b* colour scale.

Thermo Fisher Scientific (USA) announce enhanced drinking water analytical capabilities of the Thermo Scientific Environmental GC/MS Online Productivity Solutions with respect to United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) Methods 524.2 and 525.2. The powerful Thermo Scientific 524 and 525 Productivity Solutions integrate the Thermo Scientific DSQ II GC/MS instrument with layered application software, analytical columns, consumables, standard operating procedures and quick start guides to streamline method development, implementation and validation. The system can instantly be rededicated to a different method as the laboratory grows. The unique capabilities are demonstrated in two application notes available for immediate download via the new Thermo Scientific’s website.

The GC/MS analysis of volatile organics in drinking water,

according to US EPA Method 524.2, entails a number of analytical challenges, ranging from water handling to very low target compound concentrations. Traditionally a 25 mL purge volume has been used for purge and trap concentration prior to GC/MS analysis, however the best purging efficiency for polar compounds can be achieved using a 5 mL sample volume. This necessitates the use of a highly sensitive GC/MS system in order to achieve the required method detection limits (MDLs). This added sensitivity ensures rapid migration to EPA Method 524.3. In addition, another challenge is the analysis of drinking water for semi-volatile organics of varying polarities. However, using a surged splitless injection on a GC/MS can help laboratories achieve the MDLs required by US EPA Method 525.2.

The i-LAB Cuvette Adaptor (V220) allows the i-LAB to work with industry standard 10mm square cuvettes. The unique optical design of this i-LAB Sample Adaptor effectively doubles the path length for liquid measurements which increases the i-LAB’s sensitivity. The i-LAB 25mm Round Vial Adaptor (V250) allows users to work with 25mm round glass vials. This adaptor also features a double-pass design that doubles the path length. The i-LAB package also includes Spectrum Software that gives users the ability to create customised measurement methods for their specific applications.

New Literature Available to GC Users

Restek (USA) have recently released 3 new technical brochures of particular relevance to GC users in the oil related sectors. ‘New Solutions for Your Petro Analyses’ (pictured above) includes chromatograms, technical tips, and products developed specifically for petrochemical testing. Details recommendations for simulated distillation, PLOT column applications, DHA, D3606, biodiesel, permanent gases and hydrocarbons. (lit. cat.# PCFL1195). ‘Next Generation GC PLOT Columns’ examines new bonded PLOT columns from Restek, which offer significantly reduced particle release, which extends column lifetime and gives highly reproducible retention times column-to-column. This 8-page flyer illustrates the improved performance of these PLOT columns, as measured by flow restriction and chromatographic separation of various gases and solvents. (lit. cat.# PCFL1163A).

Finally; ‘Increase Productivity: Get More Runs from Your SimDist Setup Using Next Generation MXT® Columns’ discusses the new MXT®

-1HT -1HT SimDist GC columns, which are shown to outperform competitors,

allowing more productive D6352 analyses. Low bleed levels ensure accurate data and longer column lifetime. High efficiency improves resolution, assuring more samples can be run within method specifications. (lit. cat.# PCFL1201).

Conostan, a division of SCP Science (Canada) introduces PremiSolv ICP solvent; a zero-odour alternative to kerosene or xylene for use as a diluent and “zero” point standard in ICP/DCP analysis. It is available in 1 or 5 gallon bottles, including a complete certificate of analysis, listing 33 elements of extremely low metal content. In addition, its non-hazardous solvent make it ideal to ship and dispose of. It can be used in environmental, petrochemical manufacturing and machinery condition monitoring. A complimentary 400 ml sample (catalogue number 150-700-000) is available through SCP Sciences’ world-wide network of distributors.
