Safety New Gas Detection Device for Monitoring Toxic Gases

Honeywell (UK) have recently announced the release of Series 3000 MkII. Series 3000 MkII is a direct replacement for the company’s Series 3000 XPIS gas detector, offering a more robust Aluminium LM25 or 316 stainless steel enclosure. Additionally the enclosure now has two cable gland/conduit entries.

Series 3000 MkII is suited to a wide range of applications and can detect toxic gases or Oxygen in a 2-wire 4-20mA format. This wiring configuration makes the Series 3000 MkII ideal for retrofitting other 2wire devices including the Sieger Series 2000 range of 2-wire toxic gas detectors. A combination of hazardous area approvals ensures that Series 3000 MkII can be wired alongside other flameproof devices and still permit the ‘hot swap’ of a sensor, without the need to down-power the device or use a hot work permit. This type of certification approval also removes the need to segregate field wiring as required when IS (Intrinsic Safety) and Non IS field instruments are used in the same area, making the device both cost-effective and versatile. Series 3000 MkII also utilises a magnetically activated user interface, permitting configuration and calibration without opening the enclosure or having to obtain a hot work permit.

Series 3000 MkII offers excellent reliability and ease of use with smart gas sensors which configure automatically when plugged into the transmitter. Onboard diagnostics provide a wealth of useful information during operation and fault finding routines. In addition, the patented ‘Reflex’ sensors test algorithms to ensure sensing elements are fitted and operational at all times. For extra flexibility, the remote sensor can be mounted up to 15m (50 feet) away from the transmitter making the Series 3000 MkII the ideal choice for applications where the point of detection is located in a hard-to-reach area, e.g. in high or low level concealed areas or inside a room with the transmitter located outside.

The gas sensors available for the Series 3000 MkII include Oxygen, Carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen Sulphide, Chlorine, Sulphur Dioxide, Chlorine Dioxide, Nitrogen Monoxide, Nitrogen Dioxide, Hydrogen, Hydrogen Fluoride, Ammonia and Phosphine. Further releases will include Hydrogen Chloride, Hydrogen Cyanide and Ozone. Series 3000 MkII is ATEX, IECEx, UL and c-UL certified.

New Portable Detector for Flammable Gases

The µGazex developed by Gazomat™ (France) provides users with personal protection in potentially explosive atmosp- heres. ATEX group 1 and group 2 approved, this multifunction explosivity meter device complies with all the European safety standards.

The µGazex is available in four versions for use across a wide range of applications; Explosivity meter – 1 measurement scale : 0-100% LEL, Explosivity meter -catharometer – 2 measurement scales : 0-100% LEL et 0-100% Vol. Gas, Explosivity meter – 3 measurement scales – 0-10.000 ppm – 0-100% LEL et 0-100% Vol. Gas and Methane level meter – 1 measurement scale – 0-4.4% CH4- for use in mines.

Gas Detection Sensors Offer Flexibility in Communication

Detcon's (USA) state-of-the-art Model 700 gas detection sensors now include wireless technology as an integration option. All 700 sensors are equipped with standard 4-20mA analog and Modbus RS-485 outputs. The Model RXT-300, Detcon wireless gas detection system, is designed to work with 700 sensors and other Field devices with an RS-485 Modbus serial output. The RXT-300 is a wireless Modbus replacement and links one master to one or more slaves. Additional communication solutions for the Model 700 include HART, Foundation fieldbus, Profibus, and a recently mechanically repackaged Remote Sensor/Alarm Relay Module.

Internal Safety Shutoff and Operating Valve

The Shand and Jurs (USA) 96330 Internal Safety Shutoff and Oper- ating Valve provides automatic, foolproof, quick-acting shutoff of product flow in tanks and manifold lines.

“The 96330 is extremely versatile,” Product Manager Michael Landato said. “It can be mounted in the tank or in line.” The 96330 is used most effectively for safety shutoff or operating valves in manifold lines. Its action is bi-directional with respect to flow and pressure and its balanced piston design resists opening due to tank or line pressure.

The 96330 is designed to be held in a normally closed or open position by a spring loaded balanced type piston. The valve checks closed in either direct- ion when operating pressure is removed.

Very easy to use, with its single control key, the operator needs only to turn the unit on and off. He can also display the maximum values by simply pressing the control key. With the explosivity meter-catharometer version, the switching between the scales is automatic. The detector has a powerful triple alert system, offering audible, visual and vibration alarms. The fast-responding sensor is remarkable for its high stability whilst under extended exposure to gas. Ultra-light and compact in design, the detector will conveniently accompany operators in their everyday work and ensure a maximum level of safety. The Li-Ion battery provides up to 16 hours of continuous operation and greatly contributes to the light weight of the device. The double-protection elastometer housing with IP 67 protection, resistant to dust and brief immersion in water, provides greater durability to the detector for use in extremely harsh environments.

The µGazex comes in with a multi-support fastening clip, a power supply unit and a charger -conveniently; the latter can also be used to test the detector via a USB cable connected to a PC. A whole set of optional accessories are available such as a test kit, a sampling system and a multi-point charger assembly - designed for up to 10 units. The latter option will be of special interest to companies operating a large number of detectors; and, last but not least, the detector is easy to maintain.
