Measurement and Testing

Revolutionary Photoionisation Detector for Volatile Organic Compounds

Ion Science (UK) introduces the new ground breaking PhoCheck Tiger photoionisation detector (PID) for rapid, accurate detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). A significant development in PID, the instrument’s powerful software and performance features set new industry standards for hand held VOC detection.

The instrument’s revolutionary PID technology provides a dynamic detection range of 1 parts per billion (ppb) to 20,000 parts per million (ppm), offering the widest measurement range on the market. PhoCheck Tiger is pre programmed with over 450 response factors.

Ready to use right out of the box, PhoCheck Tiger’s advanced software features mean the instrument requires no complicated programming and set up procedures to perform both basic and advanced functions.

The instrument has the fastest response time on the market and is just as quick to clear down. PhoCheck Tiger can be connected directly to a PC via the USB offering extremely fast data download capabilities. Wireless data download via a Bluetooth interface is available as an option.

The instrument’s patented Fence Electrode Technology has received independent verification

for best performing PID for speed and accuracy, effectively minimising contamination effects. The instrument’s exceptional performance in high humidity environments is achieved without impairing other features.

PhoCheck Tiger has been designed for the safe replacement of batteries in hazardous environments. Long life rechargeable Li-ion batteries give up to 30 hours of use. Fast battery charging allows the instrument to be fully charged in 6.5 hours, while 8 hours of use can be achieved from 1.5 hours charge.

The unique six pin miniPID detector cell with anti-contamination design dramatically extends run time in the field. Low cost filters and lamps can be easily changed in seconds, minimising instrument downtime. Inexpensive disposable parts mean PhoCheck Tiger has the lowest running costs on the market.

PhoCheck Tiger is a fully upgradeable instrument with multiple functions to choose from. A base unit can be upgraded with data logging, health and safety and ppb options, remotely, without needing to be returned to the factory.

PhoCheck Tiger offers simple, one handed operation. Its rugged design and protective, removable rubber boot withstand the harshest environments. The large, clear back-lit display allows for easy viewing in any light condition. An integrated torch is designed for directing the instrument’s probe into dimly lit areas.

Simple key pad operation and icon driven menu mean ease of use across global markets. The illuminated software keys are large enough to be operated even when wearing the thickest gloves.

The instrument has two 95 bBA audible alarms, two bright flashing LEDs and a vibration alarm. Each function can be selected, switched off or turned down as required.

IECEx, UL and CSA approved, PhoCheck Tiger is globally certified as intrinsically safe for use in hazardous areas. Designed to IP65, the rugged PhoCheck Tiger provides optimal resistance to moisture, dust and contamination.

Target industries and applications for PhoCheck Tiger include Industrial Safety, Environmental, Petrochemical, Chemical, Indoor Air Quality, and Hazardous Materials.

CCTV Solution Kit for Hazardous Areas on Offshore Platforms

R. Stahl (Germany) has compiled a scaleable package comprising cameras and a recording system for camera surveillance in hazardous areas on gas and oil rigs. In addition to making operations safer, it enables users to carry out a thorough study of causes and fix any problems in the case of incidents, since the system supports both live monitoring at HMI stations as well as complete documentation of events.

The standard package includes four cameras whose video signals can be

recorded manipulation-proof for up to ten days. This net-work-compliant solution also permits authorised remote access to images via the internet. If users wish to integrate more image sources, the system can be easily expanded to include twice or four times as many cameras. While the standard package features a 500 GB hard disk, the recording capacity can also be easily expanded to meet specific application requirements. Resolutions of up to 4CIF, i.e. full PAL format with 704 x 576 pixels, can be selected for the H.264 compressed digital video files. A PTZ control module is available for the remote control of the pan/tilt/zoom functions of the cameras.

The standard set includes four type EC-710 spherical cameras for zones 1 and 2 designed to endure even very rough conditions on offshore platforms in ex-treme climates. Their steel housing can withstand aggressive chemical substances and protects the cameras from substantial mechanical stress. It can be installed in ambient temperatures ranging from -30°C to +75°C. A heater is used to prevent condensation or frost forming on the surface. With a diameter of only 55 mm and a mere 435 grams, the cameras can be fitted into the smallest of spaces.

The fixed viewing angle of the hardened lens is +/- 90° horizontally and 68° vertically. In addition to the EC-710 and other camera models, video server and recording technology, various HMI station types for local surveillance, and suitable software solutions, R. Stahl can also provide any peripherals as part of the system solution. A broad range of cables, switches, explosion-proof terminal boxes as well as additional input devices such as keyboards or joysticks for remotely controllable camera models are available.

Municipal water engineers and plant technicians treating water for sulphates and hydrogen sulphide

(H2S) will find the new S10 and S17 sulphide Sensors from Electro-Chemical Devices (ECD) (USA) provide advanced instrumentation to help plants and processes operate smoothly and efficiently with lower operating costs.

Sulphates and H2S are often present naturally in ground water in areas near oil fields, coal mines, peat

deposits and areas where geothermal activity occurs. They give the water a bitter taste and the odor of rotten eggs that if left untreated makes it unsuitable as a source of municipal drinking water. With proper analysis of sulphide levels and treatment, however, the water can then be made available to the public.

ECD’s advanced S10 and S17 sulphide Analytical Sensors provide accurate, reliable analysis of sulphide levels that helps ensure proper water treatment. The S10 Sensor is an immersion or an insertion style sensor, and the S17 is a valve retractable style sensor. They are fully re-buildable and feature a 316 stainless steel body that incorporates the sensing element, a temperature module and a signal conditioner with cabling.

sulphides are also commonly present in sewage and wastewater treatment plants. The S10 and S17’s pIon electrode cartridge measures the activity of “free” sulphide ions in solution in concentrations from 0.01 to 32,000 ppm over a pH range from 11-14 pH. The pIon can measure sulphide ions over a wide temperature range of 0 to 80ºC.

Both the S10 and S17 sulphide Sensors utilise ECD’s replaceable electrode cartridges, which can be selected to measure pH, ORP, dissolved oxygen, conductivity and resistivity. These cartridges provide specific solutions for the most demanding measurement requirements, and they are constructed in a variety of configurations and materials to support diverse industries. The application specific sensor cartridges utilise field proven construction materials that are selected for long life and accuracy.

The S10 and S17 Sensors can be integrated with ECD’s C22 Analyser to provide automatic pH compensation for a total sulphide measurement system. The C22 Analyser features ECD's advanced Multi-Bus architecture. The Multi-Bus design enables customisation of up to four inputs and six outputs in a convenient 1/2 DIN NEMA 4X enclosure. Channel comparisons or measurement compen- sation, configurable conductivity concentration curves, the graphical display of data and PID control on the outputs or up to 8 optional SPDT relays are just a few of the powerful features in this easy to use instrument.
