Analytical Instrumentation

Hybrid Mass Spectrometer Selected by New Brazilian Petroleomics Laboratory to Rapidly Characterise Petroleum Samples

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., (USA) have announced that the new petroleomics laboratory at the Thomson Mass Spectrometry Laboratory, part of the Institute of Chemistry, State University of Campinas, Brazil, has purchased a Thermo Scientific LTQ FT Ultra hybrid mass spectrometer. The laboratory will use the LTQ FT Ultra™ to rapidly and simultaneously characterise multiple compounds in petroleum samples, accelerating productivity and delivering improved efficiencies in the laboratory.

Petroleum is the world’s most complex natural mixture and one of the most challenging samples for chemical analysis. The new laboratory is a partnership between leading Brazilian oil producer Petrobras, the Brazilian Energy Company and the Brazilian National Agency of Petroleum (ANP). With the goal of fostering the research and development of new analytical technologies through academic research, Petrobras has invested more than $2.5 million to establish and equip a petroleomics laboratory within the Thomson Mass Spectrometry Laboratory. The petroleomics laboratory will evaluate the application of Fourier transform mass spectrometry (FTMS) technology for crude oil production and processing. Experiments performed in the laboratory have already highlighted the power of the technology to achieve direct characterisation of crude oil samples without prior or on-line separation methods.

The laboratory selected the Thermo Scientific LTQ FT Ultra for its unique capability to identify by molecular

formula up to 10,000 crude components in a single petroleum sample in as little as 10-15 minutes. In addition, the instrument gives the petroleomics laboratory a unique combination of the most advanced ion trap and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance technologies in a single instrument with exceptional analytical power and versatility. Since its implementation, the LTQ FT Ultra has significantly improved the quality and quantity of data being acquired.

Professor Dr. Marcos Nogueira Eberlin, coordinator of the new laboratory, comments: “Until recently, the

research and development of new petroleomics technologies in Brazil was mainly done using public resources. However, Brazilian petroleum companies are now increasingly working with academic laboratories to develop up- to-date, advanced analytical techniques. By implementing superior technology such as the LTQ FT Ultra hybrid mass spectrometer in our petroleomics laboratory, we ensure that this technology can fulfill Petrobras’ requirements for maximum analytical speed and optimal data quality. The LTQ FT Ultra is a critical tool in our laboratory infrastructure that enables us to greatly enhance Petrobras’ oil exploration and production processes.”

Spectrometers Cover ~200-1050 nm Wavelengths Extended Spectral Range with High Optical

Ocean Optics (The Netherlands) has expanded the wavelength capabilities of several of its popular miniature fibre optic spectrometers. The XR-Series, available for the USB2000+, JAZ-EL2000, and USB4000, covers all wavelengths from ~200-1050 nm with the convenience and affordability of a single, monolithic spectrometer.

The new XR-1 grating option developed by Ocean Optics overcomes the traditional challenges of providing broad UV-NIR coverage in a single miniature spectrometer. With a 500 lines/mm density, the grating delivers high performance at a budget-friendly price, without increasing the system footprint. The XR-1 grating is available pre- configured in the USB2000+, JAZ-EL2000, and USB4000 and may also be added as an option to custom-built systems.

The XR-Series spectrometers deliver an optical resolution of ~2.0 nm (FWHM). Ocean Optics’ proprietary order- sorting filter is applied directly to the detector to eliminate second- and third-order effects. The 25 µm slit on the preconfigured units delivers good optical resolution for most applications. XR-Series spectrometers are a convenient single-instrument solution for setups where both UV-VIS and VIS-NIR measurements are needed, and are well suited to measurement of samples with response across the entire wavelength range, such as solar irradiance, atomic emission line measurement and some plasma applications.

A New Volumetric Karl Fischer Titrator

Specialist Karl Fischer titrator manufacturer, G.R. Scientific (UK), have launched the Aquamax KF Volumetric to complement their Aquamax KF moisture meter which is one of the most widely used coulometric titrators.

The new KF Volumetric offers several user programmes for titration and standardisation. Incorporating two 5ml syringes, one can be used for the KF reagent and the other for automatic dosing of a standard for the titre. The second syringe can also be used for a different factor reagent or possibly special reagents for ketone / amine samples. There are two built-in peristaltic pumps, one for dispensing the solvent into the titration vessel and the other for emptying the vessel.

With many features including automatic rest cycle (stand-by mode) if not used for 15 minutes, automatic air bubble elimination, intelligent control of drift value, connection to pc, printer, balances, etc. these titrators are also covered by a 5 year parts and labour warranty.
