Versatile Syringe Pump Meters Fluids in Micro or Nano Litre Quantities


The Symax Syringe Pump is used to meter fluids in micro or nano litre quantities and features a stepper motor drive, precision carriage, syringe holder set and replaceable syringes.


The stepper motor is connected directly without gears to the drive spindle, so reducing the mechanical play between the drive and the syringe to a minimum. This results in a direct connection between the input pulse signal and liquid output.


Due to the high resolution of 25,600 steps per revolution, the motion of the individual steps is virtually undetectable. The delivery range lies between 0.5 nano litres and 44 ml per minute.


The pump can be used autonomously with a foot switch or integrated into a system.


The pump features freely selectable syringes with a corresponding syringe holder as well as custom syringe versions according to customer requirements. It is controlled via PC software and the automatic filling cycle can be switched via a controlled 3-way valve.

Xylem’s Bellingham + Stanley brand has launched the new ADP450 polarimeter with on-board Peltier temperature control for measuring optically active samples at stable temperatures.


Capable of measuring up to 3.0 OD at 589nm over a maximum tube length of 200mm, the ADP450 offers three decimal place precision to an accuracy of ±0.01° Angular making it ideal for general purpose use in food, flavours, fragrance, pharmaceutical and chemical industries as well as within academia and research.


New ‘single-shot’ or continual measurement of optical rotation or other related parameter such as specific rotation, concentration or inversion is easily achieved using the instrument’s simple Methods system. Results are clearly visible on the instruments new full colour 4” high definition display and over 8000 measurements as well as a record of the instrument’s configuration may be stored, viewed and output to LIMS or Secure PDF. Mettler Toledo balances are being used to ensure that kiwi chicks hatched in captivity are putting on enough weight to thrive once they are released into the wild. Accurate weighing of the chicks is essential to the decades-old program’s success.


Flightless kiwi birds fend off predators rather than take to the skies. In the New Zealand wild, about 50% of kiwi eggs fail even to hatch. Of those that do hatch, about 90% of chicks die within six months, and the majority of these are killed by cats or stoats. More than 200 chicks are raised each year by non-for-profit facilities around New Zealand, many at the Auckland Zoo.


Weight is a key indicator that chicks are ready to move onto the next part of their journey. Using the data, zookeepers are able to adjust feeding schedules to ensure that birds thrive and are not released early, when they have a decreased change of survival. Reliable, easy-to-use lab balances from Mettler Toledo are an integral part of the zoo’s process.


A critical milestone for a kiwi chick is its hatch weight, which on average ranges from 325 grams to 400 grams. Chicks hatch with a large and nourishing external yolk sac, which they gradually absorb through their navel over their first 10 days of life. Chicks will then drop in weight until they start feeding. Then, over a three-to-four week rearing period at the zoo, they gradually regain their hatch weight.


Once this weight is achieved, chicks are ready to be released to protected wild areas such as crèche islands or mainland sites. They remain at these sites until they reach sub-adulthood and have grown to 1.2kg – a size where they are strong enough to fend off predators.


Following a final weigh-in to confirm adequate size, chicks are relocated back home to the wild areas where they were originally conceived.
