Specac Hydraulic Press Still used After 30 Years


Sun Chemical Ltd recently spoke to Select Science about using Specac Manual Hydraulic Presses for over 30 years at their food package-testing lab in Rochdale, UK.


They utilise three of Specac’s manual presses, two of them in conjunction with temperature controllers. They also have a Golden Gate ATR to regularly analyse packaging substrates.


“Our machines are very old, but the fact they are regularly used and reliable is proof about the quality of them... We believe the presses we use to be around 30 years old and envisage using them as they are for many years yet. When they are serviced and calibrated they are always in good working order.”

Specac’s Atlas Series Manual Hydraulic Press is available in 15 and 25 ton load configurations, and is intended for a wide range of laboratory press applications. The press has a compact, small footprint design making it ideal for bench-top and glove-box laboratory applications.


With a rigid steel construction, and protective safety shield as standard, this laboratory hydraulic press is particularly well-suited as a FTIR KBr pellet press, XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) pellet press, and thin film. A range of conversion gauges (0-1, 0-2 and 0-5 Tons) are available for low pressure hydraulic press applications.


Evacuable Pellet Dies


Specac also manufactures a wide range of high-quality Atlas Series Evacuable Pellet Dies suitable compacting powdered samples into discs or briquettes. These are particularly well suited for the preparation of solid KBr pellets for FTIR molecular spectroscopic analysis and XRF pellets for X-Ray Fluorescence, but also find use in a broad range of other applications.


For optimum quality and durability of the pellet die, all parts are manufactured from hardened stainless steel, and surfaces that encounter the


sample are highly polished.
