The Coates Lab at the University of California Berkeley focuses on environmental and fossil fuel microbiology, and relies on Rainin to maintain its large pool of pipettes. Laboratory manager Anna Engelbrekston explained: “Our group’s research concentrates on oil reservoir microbes, specifi cally looking at inhibiting the production of hydrogen sulphide by sulphate reducing microorganisms, which causes oil reservoir souring. We perform a wide range of DNA and RNA studies, as well as colorimetric assays, HPLC and ion
chromatography, and have in the region of 90 manual single channel pipettes, plus a dozen or so multichannels. A number of our pipettes are Rainin LTS, which are popular with everyone in the lab, as they are very comfortable and easy to use.”
“It is important that pipettes are serviced correctly to ensure accurate, reproducible results, and so, once a year, Rainin’s technicians visit our site to carry out the necessary servicing and calibration. As we use corrosive chemicals, one big advantage of Rainin’s service is that the technicians replace the pipette seals annually. Not all companies do this, and it makes a big difference; since we started using Rainin for our pipette servicing about three years ago, far fewer of our pipettes need to be sent for maintenance in between service visits. Everything is going very well.”

Autoclaves Provide Vital Decontamination and Sterilisation at Barts Cancer Institute
Astell Scientifi c, a UK leading supplier of autoclaves, is helping to ensure the safety and reliability of laboratory work at Barts Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University of London.
A Cancer Research UK Centre of Excellence, Barts research is directed at preventing cancer and developing better diagnostic techniques and treatments to increase patient survival rates.
All the media, instruments, pipettes, tubes and blades used by the researchers in their experiments must be sterilised before use to ensure the scientifi c integrity of results. In addition, much of the waste from the laboratory has been exposed to viruses or blood samples and needs to be decontaminated according to procedures set out for Biohazard Group 2 material. Providing this vital decontamination and sterilisation are two Astell Scientifi c 735 litre square chamber autoclaves, whose large capacity enables them to complete the daily loads in one cycle. Waste decontamination takes place in one unit in the morning and sterilisation of new media in the other in the afternoon. This procedure keeps the process simple and eliminates the possibility of accidental cross contamination. The two new Astell autoclaves were adapted to be installed side by side with custom-designed fascia panels providing a neat, hygienic fi nish.
Principal Laboratory Manager Vipul Bhakta is pleased with the tailor-made solution. “We replaced two 10-years-old Astell units that had given excellent service”, he said, “the new autoclaves have password- protected cycles that ensure effi cient sterilisation of all our loads.” And the equipment is supported by Astell’s customer service network through local UK based engineers to ensure speed of response should operational issues arise.

Stackable Autoclaves Give Labs Greater Sterilising Flexibility
For laboratories with segregated loads waiting sterilisation each requiring their own unique process settings may cause serious delays and create unsafe bottlenecks within a laboratory or cleanroom if they only use a single autoclave. Such situations can be overcome with the new range of front-loading stackable autoclaves being introduced by British manufacturer Priorclave. It brings greater versatility to autoclave usage with the ability to sterilise two distinct loads simultaneous, each with their own sterilisation control setting.
The new stackable autoclave range initially comprises two standard arrangements, dual 150 litre models and dual 200 litre chamber capacities models. This give the lab manger initially looking for a 300 litre or 400 litre chamber machine the opportunity to investing in a dual 150 or 200 litre laboratory autoclave.
Now with added sterilising fl exibility in the lab, both chambers can be used to simultaneously handling the same type of waste, giving a maximum load of 300/400 litres or a series of single 150/200 litre loads starting as and when items become available. The real big plus factor is that the new stackable autoclaves enable laboratory staff to sterilise both waste and medium at the same time.
The alternative to achieving this fl exibility is the purchase of two separate machines; the obvious downside is that double the fl oor space is required. For laboratories where space is accountable it is a costly choice, not only in required footprint but could that space be better utilised.
