Clariant opens state-of- the-art Chinese R&D centre

lariant Catalysts has opened a new, state- of-the-art R&D centre within the Clariant

Innovation Center China at the company’s One Clariant Campus (OCC) in Shanghai. Kevin Chan, Head of Clariant

Catalysts China, said that the centre’s proximity to customers will assist Clariant’s research activities by providing unfiltered, first-hand information about local needs and market trends. The Chinese chemical industry has been growing steadily over the past years at higher rates than other regions and China is now the largest chemical market in the world and the country alone accounts for 46% of world chemical sales.

The R&D center will focus on

four fields addressing China’s moves to drive sustainability and efficiency: more sustainable solutions for the coal value chain, hydrogenation for high value-adding chemicals, environmental protection, and custom catalysts. Capabilities

of the centre include catalyst research and development, preparation, characterization, and performance testing. The centre features three lab units across a two-storey, 27,000 sq. ft. space equipped with advanced equipment for catalyst preparation, solid surface characterization and chemical analysis, as well as catalyst performance testing on various scales.

With this new Catalyst R&D

Center, the Clariant Innovation Center China hosts five Technology Platforms, namely Chemistry and Materials, Biotechnology, Catalysis, Process Technology, and Emerging Technologies. Clariant says these

platforms are the key enablers for innovation and that, in combination with the Application Platforms of the company’s business units, they will be the basis for market-driven innovation and allow an adequate response to sustainability challenges.

Stephenson launches first ever solid conditioning bar

Natural ingredients manufacturer Stephenson has launched its first solid shampoo conditioning bar as part of its commitment to sustainability in the personal care market. The new solid conditioner base is the latest addition to the company’s established melt and pour range and is designed to help consumers reduce the use of plastic containers and use less

water during hair washing. The new conditioning bar formulation can be tailored using additives of the customer’s own choice and the natural ingredients include behentrimonium chloride, a cationic surfactant that helps condition the hair; shea butter and coconut oil, which provide hydration; and hydrogenated ethylhexyl olivate, a natural emollient within the base.
