Tried and tested - the best electric cars
With electric cars now entering into the mainstream of car sales, never has been a better time to have a look at some of the protagonists. An astonishing fact from the SMMT was that one in 10 of cars sold in August this year was electric. With this in mind, motoring journalist Nick Jones has a peek see if low-emission vehicles spark up his enthusiasm.
Not in any particular order you understand, some of the all- electric cars you can buy today are real lookers with some seeming distinctly familiar but you’ll have to pay for the privilege over petrol and diesel.
AUDI E-TRON Perhaps not as sporty as you’d like from a premium brand, but it oozes class and is both quiet and comfy. Expect to pay around £55,000. One thing I really like is you can do away with the mirrors and replace them with cameras, with small screens internally – really cool!
JAGUAR I-PACE Small SUV that looks great and is Jaguar’s first all-electric car. Expect 250-plus miles between charges, and it gets to 80% of capacity with just a 90-minute charge. Price around £62,000.
KIA E-NERO Only costs around £33,000, it’s very well equipped and offers decent performance with the promise of 250-plus miles between charges. Lots of room internally.
RENAULT ZOE A nice, nippy, zippy small car that has room for four adults and comfy to boot. Costs around £27,000. Cheap to run, also.

PEUGEOT E-208 Great-looking car, better quality that the Zoe is and has 200-plus miles of range. Looks very familiar in shape to all other Peugeots.
TESLA MODEL 3 Lots of hype around this car, as it only costs around £44,000. Unreal performance and is a great executive way to travel, with looks to match. Special is this one.
Naturally, manufacturers are bringing more and more electric vehicles out all the time – the likes of Porsche Taycan, Mini E, Honda e, Hyundai Kona and the all-new Volkswagen ID.4 compact SUV. At the end of the day, electric
vehicles are becoming more and more popular but, in the early days, folks were understandably sceptical about charging and running out of juice. But no more – the current crop are feats of engineering and should be worthy contenders on anyone’s next car purchase.
