Derby-based training and development company AWD Development Solutions has been selected as one of Small Business Saturday’s SmallBiz100 2020 businesses. Small Business Saturday has
been held on the first Saturday in December for the past eight years. It highlights small business

‘As part of my commitment to Small Business Saturday I’m going to set up a free mastermind group for fellow small business owners’
AWD Development Solutions
owner Andrew Deighton said: “2020 has been and continues to be a really tough year for many small businesses. Being selected as one of this year’s SmallBiz100 is fantastic
Airport adopts water-saving tech
East Midlands Airport has further improved its environmental credentials by adopting a water conservation system at the Castle Donington passenger terminal. EMA is the latest company
to team up with Derby-based washroom water conservation specialist HSG and install the Ureco system, which reduces water consumption, saves money on utility bills and improves the washroom experience for passengers departing and arriving at the airport. EMA’s head of asset
maintenance services Saeid Nikjooy said: “The results from the trial were outstanding both in terms of the washroom hygiene and the reduced water usage. We have rolled out the system across the site with 68 Ureco units and 26 Uretech water managers.” The Ureco system will reduce
EMA’s water consumption by 16.85 million litres over the next three years.
6 business network November 2020
Andrew Deighton ran free online training sessions to celebrate AWD Development Solutions’ SmallBiz100 success
recognition and a real boost. “I set up AWD Development Solutions six years ago after being made redundant by Rolls-Royce following a 26-year career. I wanted to help other businesses to grow by developing business owners, their employees and their teams.” A nationwide application process
is held to select the SmallBiz100 and AWD Development Solutions
Cardinal Square
was one of the 100 businesses chosen from thousands of entries. Andrew continued: “I’ve applied
for the last four years, so I’m absolutely delighted to have been chosen as one of the SmallBiz100 this year. “My allocated day to be featured
was 9 September. During that day I ran free online training sessions specifically to help small business
owners develop themselves so they can grow their businesses. “As part of my commitment to
Small Business Saturday, I’m going to set up a free mastermind group for fellow small business owners. This group will provide mutual support, ideas and advice. Members can share experiences in a safe and confidential environment, and build a valuable network and community.”
New home for recruitment firm
Multi award-winning company Astute Recruitment has moved to new offices at Cardinal Square in Derby. The accountancy recruitment specialist started up in
2009 and director Mary Maguire believes Derby is well placed to weather the pandemic, with many companies it deals with still looking to grow finance and accountancy teams. “We clearly haven’t got a crystal ball, however from
the snapshot of conversations we’ve had, companies are saying the furlough scheme has really helped them through,” said Mary. “A lot of them are not just trading but are continuing to do well. “We’re confident that the relationships we’ve built from continually speaking to clients in lockdown will
continue to flourish and that the new offices will help us achieve the next stage in our plans for growth. The new offices are providing a polished and professional working environment for our team to thrive and continue to grow.” Cardinal Square is a five-storey landmark office
building on the A52 and Astute has taken up a large suite on the ground floor. Cardinal Square asset manager David Dyas said: “The
team at Astute is just the sort of occupier we hoped to attract. It is a growing, established, people-focused company driven by two very successful local entrepreneurs. I’m delighted that Cardinal Square has been chosen for the next phase of Astute’s growth.”
