Solihull Solihull Chamber Patrons

Small firms the focus of campaign

Solihull Council is encouraging residents and businesses to get behind its ‘Support Local’ campaign. ‘Support Local’ is a collaboration between the council and

stakeholders, including the Chamber, and is focused on small and independent retailers on the borough’s high streets. Council officers have engaged with businesses to gather case

studies, highlighting the impact of Covid-19 and what they have done to adapt during this challenging time. One example is Touchwood-based restaurant Yakinori which decided

during lockdown to make meals for the NHS. Chelmsley Wood-based Jac’s Café made more than 200 meals for the elderly and vulnerable, which were delivered by community volunteers. Shirley business Bei Capelli Hair Design is also being highlighted because of the safety measures put in place ahead of reopening. The case studies also demonstrate the range of independent retailers in the area. Cllr Karen Grinsell, deputy leader of Solihull Council, said: “It is

important we use our high streets and town centres now more than ever – without local support it may not be there in the future. We understand that businesses have also felt a sense of uncertainty during these last months, which is why we are encouraging them to engage with us and residents through this campaign.”

Good shot: Jamie’s sunset picture

Student’s landscape shot is shortlisted

A Solihull College & University Centre student is celebrating after his landscape photograph was shortlisted to feature at this year’s ‘The Photography Show’. Jamie Spensley, 17 from Solihull, was following the show on Instagram and

saw a competition to capture an image that represented ‘looking forward’. Jamie submitted a landscape photograph of a sunset view looking out to sea, and was thrilled to hear his image had been chosen. The Photography Show is normally staged at the NEC, and will return

there next year. However, this year’s event was ‘virtual’, due to Covid. Jamie, who studies media at the college and has just started his second

year, said: “It meant a lot to me because I put a lot of effort into taking and editing my photographs. And to see my hard work being showcased in a virtual gallery along with many other talented photographers is amazing.”
