Powering towards a sustainable future
Sutton Coldfield MP Andrew Mitchell has praised a company in the Royal Town for its ‘pioneering’ work as the UK switches from coal- fired power generation to sustainable energy. Andrew Mitchell was visiting Power Minerals
Ltd at their town centre offices and learned how the company finds new uses for the by-products of power stations. Owned by German company STEAG, Power
Minerals funds important research into the use of power station by products, lobbies on behalf of the sector and is working to ensure legacy stockpiles of ash built up over decades of power generation across Britain can be accessed for future use. Mr Mitchell said: “Power Minerals is perhaps
the best-kept secret of the Sutton Coldfield business community because few local people realise that we have a company here that is at the forefront of the UK’s changing energy sector. “The company takes the millions of tonnes of
ash created by decades of coal-fired power generation and finds uses for it in the construction and infrastructure sectors. Thanks
to their expertise, this power station ash is used in concrete and cement, block work on buildings, paving slabs – it’s everywhere. “This is important from an ecological point of
view, because companies that use the ash provided by PML don’t have to carve up the green belt to mine fresh aggregate for their cement products, which also use much less energy to manufacture. They are now working on ways to reuse the by-products of biomass power generation too. “As the UK restarts the economy post Covid-
19 there will be many, many major projects that will benefit from PML’s dependable supply chain, not least the hundreds of thousands of homes that we need to build as a nation.” PML managing director Nigel Waldron said:
“The power generation sector is going through huge changes - coal-fired power is coming to an end. However, these changes bring significant opportunities to find sustainable and sensible uses for power generation by products, whether that’s ash created by decades of coal or products created by sustainable power.”
Budding blogger wins writing competition
A budding young blogger has been crowned the winner of the Royal Town’s junior journalist competition. Nine-year old Evie Anderson from Sutton
Coldfield was named the newest contributor to Sutton Coldfield’s What’s On website after wowing judges with her creative writing skills. The competition called on aspiring writers
throughout the area to showcase their talents and shout about their town on the new online hub, which was launched by Sutton Coldfield Town Centre BID and Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council. Evie, who was awarded a £50 voucher and
tasked with penning a short piece documenting her adventures in the Royal Town, chose to visit Empire Cinema for her first blog. There she enjoyed the blockbuster movie, ‘100% Wolf’, with her family. Evie said: “I love writing and there is so
much to see and do in Sutton, so it’s great to be able to write about it. Our visit to the cinema was fantastic. I’m looking forward to writing about my next adventure already!” Mike Bushell, Sutton Coldfield Town
Centre BID manager, added: “We were incredibly impressed by Evie’s entry. “The competition aims to give young

Town Hall ditches single use plastic glasses
Sutton Coldfield Town Hall has delivered on its promise to eliminate all single use plastic glasses as part of the Sutton Coldfield Chamber EcoPledge. The pledge was made last year at the Royal Business Fair when former Chamber president and now honorary chair Katie Hall launched the sustainability scheme. The Town Hall’s commitment to eradicating single use plastic glasses
from its bar was named the winning pledge by PLOTT Creative, who ran a competition as part of the campaign launch. Katie Hale said: “It’s really encouraging to see some of the pledges that
were made coming to life. “This pledge was a big commitment for the Town Hall, they are working
hard to ensure their renovations are taking the lead on sustainability. “We would love to feature any other businesses’ who took on pledges and see how they have come to life.”
