Finance sector forges special relationship
Representatives from the UK and US financial and professional services industries have joined together to propose a united business vision for future regulatory cooperation and dialogue. The group’s proposals aim to help forge
even closer links between the hosts of the world’s two foremost financial centres. The paper was released on the same day
that the group relaunched as the British American Finance Alliance (BAFA), a coalition of 20 British and American trade associations and industry bodies representing both financial and professional services that originally formed in 2018. BAFA’s recommendations seek to build
on the success of the UK-US Financial Regulatory Working Group, announced by HM Treasury and the US Department of the Treasury in 2018. BAFA argues that establishing the right
parameters and repurposing the FRWG behind a long-term vision will enhance regulatory dialogue. In turn, this will reduce cross-border
frictions between the UK and US, bolster cross-border investment and support stronger economic growth and job creation for both countries. “This is an important strategic opportunity for the US financial services industry to strengthen cross-border regulatory and supervisory cooperation between the United Kingdom and the United States,” said Kenneth E. Bentsen Jr, president and CEO of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
Transatlantic trade links more important than ever
The Greater Birmingham Transatlantic Chamber of Commerce will surge ahead in its bid to create business opportunities with North America, despite the many “knowns and unknowns” around the world. That’s the view of Professor Julian Beer, who
was confirmed as Transatlantic Chamber president for another year at the organisation’s annual general meeting. Professor Beer told the online AGM that the
West Midlands must capitalise on its trade surplus with the United States and Canada in order to overcome challenges posed by Covid-19, Brexit and political volatility. “The Transatlantic Chamber has, with the
support of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce team and the executive committee, continued to surge ahead and support businesses through these difficult times and the current situation.
‘So for us it is very important that we carry on forging trade links’
“Although we recognise it has been particularly
difficult year, we’ve managed to sustain a healthy membership of loyal and committed members. “I look forward to leading the Transatlantic
Chamber through the known and the unknown at this time. “Whatever the next year holds we will continue
to support, make connections and help businesses grow. “The trade surplus we’ve got with North
America is bigger and better than the rest of the regions in the UK.

“So for us it is very important that we carry on
forging trade links. We’ve been trading partners for a very long time and as the world gets increasingly challenging in terms of politics and everything else going on around the globe, we’re going to have to be close allies, as we have been historically. “It is going to be really important that we keep
those ties going forward.” All members of the Transatlantic Chamber’s
executive committee will continue for another year, including vice presidents Eileen Schofield (Schofield & Associate) and James Tait (Browne Jacobson), as well as honorary chair Harry Reilly.
Airline launches Covid-19 testing programme
United Airlines has become the first US airline to launch a Covid-19 pilot testing programme for travellers. This major development could make it easier for passengers to manage
quarantine requirements and entry conditions of popular destinations around the world. Customers travelling on United from San Francisco International Airport
(SFO) to Hawaii will have the option to take a rapid test at the airport or a self-collected, mail-in test ahead of their trip. The rapid Abbott ID NOW Covid-19 test – administered by GoHealth
Urgent Care and their partner Dignity Health – provides results in approximately 15 minutes and will be available to United customers on the same day as their flight departing from SFO. The mail-in test option will be administered by Color and it is
recommended that customers initiate testing at least 10 days prior to their trip and provide their sample within 72 hours of their trip. United currently offers more flights to Hawaii than any other major
network carrier including daily service between San Francisco and Honolulu (HNL), Maui (OGG) and Kona (KOA). The carrier plans to increase service to Hawaii, including the resumption
of service between San Francisco and Lihue (LIH) and additional flights between San Francisco and Maui and Kona.
