Simplified Active Lives Survey for the Summer Term 2020

COVID-19 has caused unprecedented disruption to all our lives and at this difficult time it is right that we prioritise those things that are most important. We understand that the Active Lives Children and Young People survey is not a priority for everyone at this time, but we have been contacted by Sport England and various government departments to ask schools about the possibility of completing a simplified survey during the summer term.

Engagement is voluntary and there will be no response rate targets. Sport England hopes that at least 100 schools will volunteer to take part in the survey during the summer term, enabling the production of useful national estimates of young people’s engagement in and attitudes towards sport and physical activity (we understand it is not realistic to achieve the level of response originally planned to enable local authority level reporting).

Schools taking part in the survey will receive their own school level report (wherever there is sufficient data). Additionally, those schools

will receive the normal equipment incentive for their participation.

Exact details will be confirmed shortly, but class selection rules will be simplified. The survey questionnaire and supporting materials are being revised, so they can easily be used by schools for home completion by their students (there will also be a school completion option for vulnerable children and children of key workers who are still attending school sites).

To better support Active Partnerships and schools during this exceptional time, in addition to support from Sport England’s Research and Analysis team, Ipsos MORI will provide an additional survey helpline to deal with any questions / issue’s schools may have about administration of the survey.

Combined, the above measures are designed to provide a suitable, simplified, no pressure solution for schools who would like to take part in the Active Lives Survey. It is hoped that both children and parents might find the survey to be of interest and nice to complete at home as a family.

NEXT STEPS:

Sport England will work with Ipsos MORI to quickly revise the survey

questionnaire and materials. A more detailed timeline will follow as soon as possible. This will confirm when

new survey guidance / materials will be available.

We hope the new arrangements will be in place for the during early May 2020.

In the meantime, if your school might be interested in taking part in the simplified survey, please email: rik@wiltssport.org
