PE and Sports Premium
During these uncertain times, Wiltshire and Swindon Sport, your Active Partnership, is aware that many schools may have questions and queries relating to the PE and Sport Premium spend during school closures and the impact on things such as scheduled swimming during the summer term. Active Partnerships have been liaising with DfE on this to help put together an FAQ for schools which the DfE hope to release soon.
DfE want to reassure schools that they are working on this and additionally, an update on the future of the Primary PE and Sport Premium Grant past the current academic year.
On asking the DfE about eligible spend etc., they have said that as long as the school is still using the investment against one or more of the key indicators then that is fine e.g. some schools may be investing in buying/ creating online content to help CYP stay active at home.
Wiltshire and Swindon Sport want to give reassurance to schools that DfE are aware this is a challenging time and further guidance and updates should be available soon.
In terms of the Website reviews and area mapping exercise scheduled for 31st July, discussions are ongoing with DfE and Sport England with detailed information intended to be available over the coming weeks. However, it would be prudent to continue to plan for some form of mapping activity where possible around the PE and Sport Premium for the latest academic year as planned. (Possibly over the summer into September).
Proposed – PE and Sport Premium Grant
Governor, Headteacher and PE leads ‘Virtual’ presentations’
Given the current situation both in regards to the Covid 19 pandemic and delays with an update on the future of the Primary PE and Sports Premium grant, Wiltshire and Swindon Sport are proposing to offer ‘Virtual presentations’ to schools as and when confirmed updates are released.
WASP’s Primary PE and Sport Premium Lead Officer, Rik Grover will be able to offer a virtual PowerPoint presentation offering guidance and support on the primary sports premium.
The presentation will be approximately 30 minutes in duration and will offer an overview of the Primary Sports Premium with all updates, plus relevant information depending on the presentation audience. A guidebook specific for school Governors is also available both digitally and as a hard copy.
Does PE matter in your school?
There has never been a more important time for PE in primary schools.
Recent research (prior to the current pandemic) found that half of all seven-year olds do not get enough exercise, only 38 per cent of girls at that age take part in the recommended hour of moderate or vigorous exercise a day and one in three young people leave primary school overweight. These statistics show how important high-quality PE and sport is in tackling the growing levels of inactivity amongst primary age children in the UK.
If young people enjoy taking part
in physical activity early on in life, they will go on to lead active healthy lifestyles, but if they have a bad experience, particularly at school, they could be put off for life.
Physical activity is associated with numerous health benefits for children, such as muscle and bone strength, health and fitness, improved quality of sleep and maintenance of a healthy weight.
There is also evidence that physical activity and participating in organised sports and after school clubs is linked to improved academic performance.
