have been a journalist, a job where the injudicious consumption of alcohol is not entirely unknown, for all my working life. Whilst acknowledging the closure of every pub in Britain in order to combat the
COVID-19 virus as a sensible measure, I hope that they will soon be open again, along with bars and restaurants at marinas and harbours throughout the world. The benefits of social concourse where people with a love of boats and the marine lifestyle can meet to share experiences of cruising and racing, and plan visits to new destinations should not be under-estimated. This gathering of like-minded people also applies
to conferences, exhibitions and networking. As can be seen in the ‘Diary of events’ on page 33, I have not taken the risk of listing any shows before the Southampton Boat Show in September. Mercator Media’s Seawork that includes suppliers to the marina industry was planned for June, but has been postponed. The organiser is continuing to work on the 23rd edition of this well-established event, but is not yet able to confirm the rescheduled dates. In Australia, the Marina Industries Association is making rapid adjustments to services for its

membership that spans many countries being impacted by COVID-19. Due to the end of group training and networking, the organisation is ramping up its on-line learning and meetings capability. All 11 face-to-face courses and networking meetings to the end of June, as well as the Intermediate Marina Management course in Thailand, which was to be held in July, have been postponed or moved on-line. There is, at present, no suggestion that METSTRADE
will not take place at the RAI in Amsterdam this November when our industry will have an unprecedented opportunity to assess how temporary or long-term the effects of the pandemic will be on the boat trade and, ultimately, berth occupancy. The show is excellent for making contacts and exchanging information, both within the halls and in bars such as The Corner on Scheldeplein just over the road from the convention centre. I look forward to toasting a return to normality at my own favourite city drinking establishment – In de Wildeman – in an alley called Kolksteed not far from Dam Square.
