14 DRY STACK STORAGE

industrial forklift can handle an item such as a pallet or shipping container.

Forklift USP The unique selling point (USP) of a purpose-built boat handling forklift is its ability to launch and recover boats in the ‘negative’ lift position. This means that the rubber clad forks (to protect the boat hull) of the forklift can be lowered beneath the level of the quay ‘launchpad’ wall to both lower boats into the water and recover them. To enable the forklift to work

effectively with the dry stack storage system, it needs to be able to lift boats on to and off the rack safely. It is imperative that the forklift’s lifting capability and weight/length of boats to be lifted must be considered in terms of both ‘positive’ lift heights for loading boats on to the racks and negative lift height, with multiple forklift types currently available on the market. John Griffiths, Sales Manager at

Locators, UK distributor for the Hoist Neptune range of marina forklifts since 2008, confirmed: “The latest generation of marina forklifts can typically lift boats weighing up to around 15 tonnes and measuring 45 ft in length and they can be supplied with masts that can lift boats to a positive lift height of around 60 ft and a negative lift or lowering height to the waterline of around 25 ft”. Marina forklifts combined with

multiple tier dry stack boat storage racks offer marina and boatyard operators high density, flexible and accessible boat storage at just a small fraction of the cost of automated boat racking systems. John added, “Being a ‘non-fixed’

asset means a forklift does not have to be purchased; it can be contract- hired with maintenance included and with the cost of acquiring the forklift being spread over a pre-agreed finance re-payment term. “At Locators we are able to supply both new and reconditioned marina forklifts that can be either purchased outright or hired. We are able to supply full on-site product support with the aim being to keep our customers’ dry stacks operational at all times.” The correct combination of dry stack system and negative lift truck can give

operators of marinas and boatyards an increase in capacity and the ability to offer a different type of service to some of their customers, which will ultimately lead to the creation of an additional revenue stream.
