DRY STACK STORAGE 13
“There is an element of flexibility in our systems with beam levels that are adjustable vertically to accommodate different boat heights and the bearers that the boats sit on are adjustable to suit various boat widths, but the critical consideration is the weight of the boats to be stored. “We manufacture our dry stack
systems from galvanised structural steel sections and the size of the sections determines the weights
that can be stored on various levels. It is very important therefore that these are calculated correctly, taking into account the weight of the boats, wind loadings, etc, so that each racking system supplied to any given marina can be operated by the staff in a safe manner for both themselves and the general public.” The condition of the marina’s
ground surface is also critical from a level, finish and structural perspective. An ideal scenario is to
have an area developed specifically for the dry stack facility, yet if the storage system is to be installed on existing concrete, the floor should be as level as possible and able to withstand the combined load of rack and the boats stored upon it. The other important factor when deciding on a yard layout is the type of forklift truck that will be employed. Several variables should be considered, including type of boats, weights and sizes to be
handled, launch options and the proximity to the launch area, giving thought to the volume of launches that could be needed on a busy Summer’s day. Boat handling forklifts are a
variation of heavy-duty industrial counter-balance forklifts that have been specifically designed to launch, recover and stack boats in a purpose-built dry stack system. Boats can be handled at ground level in the same way that an
