COVID-19: European associations call for help
Europe’s boating industry associations have teamed up to jointly call on EU institutions and national governments to support the sector and protect jobs against the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak. The call for action, co-signed by 18 associations, calls for swift measures to help companies survive the immediate crisis and take actions to support recovery and stimulate demand. According to the European Boating Industry (EBI), the signatories are calling for a concrete and rapid response to support the 32,000 companies and 280,000 jobs in the industry. Most companies in the sector are SMEs and their economic contribution is particularly significant in and
around coastal areas, as well as along inland waterways. Support to the industry through assistance programmes, introduction of a voucher scheme for water-based recreation, open borders for goods and deliveries, as well as a risk-based approach to re-opening marinas and restoring production and tourism activities in anticipation of the Summer season are all being advocated. In addition, EBI and its sister association, the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA), are working closely together to provide synergies for their activities. ICOMIA is leading the global response and developing best practices for the restart of activities.
Lindley Group celebrates 90 years
This April, the Lindley Group of companies celebrates its 90th anniversary. The company can trace its origins back to 1930 when Ahlers Lindley Lda was established in Lisbon by Rudolf Ahlers and Antonio Lindley.
The Group was reorganised and divided into several companies in the early 1980s, including Almovi, which distributed mechanical handling equipment, and Lindley, which specialised in berthing facilities for marinas.
From 2000 onwards, consolidation took place as Almovi strengthened its position as a supplier of equipment from major brands such as Marine Travelift, whilst Lindley developed its own designs and products for marinas.
Ayia Napa to open
Although it is not certain about the impact of COVID-19, it is still planned to open the 300 million Euros Ayia Napa Marina in Cyprus for the Summer season.
It will provide 600 berths for yachts up to 65 m and its dry stack storage facility will be able to accommodate craft up to 10 m.
