CHAMBER NEWS “We may have greater political
certainty at Westminster, but this must now translate into clarity on the future trading relationship with the EU and other partners around the world. “Getting a strong trade deal
with the EU, backing our exporters, and taking action to cut the high cost of doing business here in the UK must all be at the top of the agenda over the coming months.” DHL Express VP Marketing,
Shannon Diett, said: “After such a long period of uncertainty it’s no surprise that exports continued to languish in the last quarter of the year. However, with the expectation of new trade deals, businesses can now look to the future and begin to plan their export strategies for 2021 and beyond. “As well as having favourable
trade arrangements in place, it is critical that exporters have access to practical logistics advice. At DHL Express, our teams are expert in cross-border trade and can help businesses navigate new waters with confidence.” Reacting to confirmation that
Laura Howard
Government intends to introduce full import controls for goods moving from the EU to Great Britain after the transition period ends on 31 December 2020, Laura Howard, Head of International Trade at East
Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire), added: “It is still unclear as to what processes will be implemented to enable importers to get their goods where they need to be on time, and this needs to be clarified by Government at the earliest opportunity. “Keeping goods moving, and as
frictionless as possible, is absolutely vital to businesses here in the East Midlands and beyond. To that end, the consultation on freeports - also announced by Government – is welcomed. “Freeports provide huge
advantages and the East Midlands is ideally placed to take advantage, both strategically and geographically. “The UK may have left the EU,
but these are still uncertain times as trade negotiations continue and the Chamber is investing in provision in this area to assist businesses across the region which trade, or are looking to trade, internationally. “We would urge businesses to
keep abreast of developments - many of which will be covered in the Chamber’s fully-funded Business Readiness for Change programme and its commercial International Trade training courses – in order to be best prepared.”
