6 INDUSTRY NEWS Marinetek to rebuild Gib’s Marina Bay I

n 2015, Marinetek completed the 700-berth Mid-Harbour Small Boat Marina for the Government of Gibraltar in just one single phase. This world- renowned Finnish company is now returning to Gibraltar to construct another ground-breaking marina development as it has been selected to rebuild Marina Bay in the heart of the Ocean Village community. The contract, which was signed at

METSTRADE on 20 November and won via competitive tender, calls for Marinetek to replace the marina’s existing Mediterranean mooring system, originally installed in the 1980s, with a complete floating pontoon arrangement. Formerly a separate 252-berth marina, Marina Bay was purchased by Ocean Village owner and Chairman Greg Butcher in 2006 and has been undergoing a major refurbishment programme. “The living heart of the marina is already built, so we want a world class

has been retained to devise the configuration of the superyacht mooring. Pontoon installation is due to take place in April/May and completion is scheduled for December, 2020. Around 60% of the berths in Marina Bay are on annual leases and boats will be relocated around the site as work progresses. The superyacht berths, part of

marina facility and superyacht marina that encourages visiting guests to stay – and not just call in for cheap fuel,” explained Marina Director William Bowman. Quality has been the watchword

throughout the entire project to date: five star bathrooms; highly-equipped laundry facilities; fibre broadband; and in-berth pump-out when other marinas in

Gibraltar resort to mobile trucks. The new floating system will not only endorse the overall quality of the marina, but take the need for larger berths into account with an expansion and reconfiguration that accommodates 270 vessels. A significant number of 15 metre and 18 metre berths are in the mix, as well as up to 12 superyacht berths. UK-based Marina Projects

an expansion being spearheaded by Marina Club, are to be complemented by 144 high-end waterfront rental apartments with rooftop spas. All apartment blocks will be linked by walkways to create an integrated community. Marinetek Director Markku

Rantanen was delighted to sign on the deal and commented, “It’s a privilege to work on Ocean Village and Marina Bay, a top quality facility that sits at the crossroads of Europe and Africa. We look forward to further boosting its destination appeal”.
