POLLUTION CONTROL 23
Versatile vessel for collecting trash T
he Versi-Cat trash skimmer manufactured by Water Witch, a world leader in waterway maintenance
solutions, is extremely adaptable for a huge range of applications ranging from fast-response to pollution control needs, to mobile pump-out service, diving and maintenance support.
A major advantage to marinas of
this vessel is its extreme versatility. The design incorporates a variety of ‘pods’ that sit between the twin hulls, enabling many tasks to be undertaken. The pod system allows heavy items to be loaded directly on to the quayside and lifted into the vessel via a crane with no need to manhandle the equipment to the water. The Versi-Cat’s principle function is the efficient collection of litter, debris, aquatic vegetation and other kinds of trash from the water surface into a removable basket, which can be lifted and tipped directly into a skip or shoreside receptacle for disposal. The design allows floating debris to simply collect between the hulls without any complex
equipment or machinery. When not in collection mode, the basket can be winched up to ensure good transit speeds and the system can even be operated with the deck plates in position. The 7 metre and 8 metre hulls offer a spacious deck area for work, with room for sorting waste if that becomes necessary. The Cargo Pod is designed specifically for transporting up to 1 tonne of cargo and equipment for use on or off the water. The pod can be craned in and out of the Water Witch empty or full, allowing the operator to keep a range of pre- configured pods on hand for jobs
such as discrete mobile pump-out and grey water storage, wash down and waste disposal. Harbour operators can efficiently
service boats on their berths or at anchor when disposal of liquid or solid waste is required and flexible storage options include built-in holding tanks or portable intermediate bulk containers. Using the latest technology,
Water Witch can now offer fully electric propulsion for its Versi- Cat trash skimmer vessels. This allows marinas to benefit from considerably lower maintenance and running costs, as well as gaining environmental credit for a zero emissions operation. Water Witch

Oil booms for marina protection
Primarily used to defend the environment from damage caused by the accidental discharge of oil in marinas, harbours and inland waterways, oil booms also serve to protect marine areas from floating debris. Ecobarrier Foam-Filled Oil Booms
are designed and manufactured at the production facility of Ecocoast in the UAE and are typically used for static or low current situations. Available in a range of five sizes, they feature a series of flat panels that float on the water to contain oil and debris. The manufacturer also provides a full service cycle of installation, maintenance and removal. Made from UV-stabilised PVC membrane fabric, Ecobarrier booms are of closed-cell construction to avoid taking up any water, They are fitted with zipties (class I) or ASTM slide connectors (class II) for easy coupling of the panels and quick deployment in

the event of a spill in an enclosed area. Another product from Ecocoast is
Ecobarrier Solid Flotation Booms, which can be deployed in various marine environments ranging from
low to moderate and high currents. This is a general-purpose boom that
will provide years of performance. It is also made of UV-stabilised PVC membrane with chain ballast, grab
handles and anchor points, making it easy to install. Ecocoast
