Ambitious vision for Britain’s marine industry

ollowing the announcement of its first-ever National Agenda, British Marine has launched an ambitious plan to drive its vision of a thriving industry delivering amazing on-water experience for everyone. A full copy of the British Marine National Agenda is available at:

Expo 2020, the exciting plan brings greater clarity and focus to British Marine’s efforts, easily demonstrating to all its members the one-of-a-kind services it offers and how these are harmonised to their activities. Emphasising the necessity for a National Agenda, Lesley Robinson, British Marine CEO, commented: “The marine industry in 2020 is facing great changes, which require decisive responses. Shifting consumer habits and values, technological advancements and environmental
pressures are combining to completely reshape the market as we have experienced it in past decades. “Disrupted times offer great opportunity, provided you are prepared and bold enough to drive the agenda. That is why we have embraced an ambitious and exciting vision and delivered a bold National Agenda, which we see as our pole star for a bright future. It’s a clear declaration of British Marine’s determination to play a significant and measurable role in supporting our members.” Focusing on each distinct pillar of the National Agenda – Participation, People & Skills, Environment, Technology & Innovation and Representation, the assertive plan presents a deliverable set of key priorities, which are being executed instantaneously. It has been crafted by British Marine’s executive team working in close collaboration with
elected member representatives. The exciting priorities outlined in the Agenda include: ● Powerful insights on how companies can adapt their products and services to changing consumer demands.
● New paths for companies to attract and retain the right people with the right skill sets, as well as enhancing diversity within the workforce.
● Promoting the sustainable operation and development of the marine industry, assisting members, as well as their customers, with minimising impacts on the environment.
● Enabling greater technological understanding and collaboration, working with members to innovate and use new technology to grow their market.
● Promoting the UK marine industry with external stakeholders to enhance and protect members’
domestic and international profiles, prospects and interests. Annually, the National Agenda will be measured, reported and updated to ensure that the Association’s expert skills and leading resources are directed towards areas of the most value for its members. This is fundamental to the Association’s progressive ‘member first’ mission to deliver outstanding services, representation and products to promote the sustainable success of its members. It guarantees that members are continually placed front and centre of all British Marine’s activities with service that is personalised to needs, easily accessible and always available.
Extension for Portland Marina
UK marina operator Dean & Reddyhoff has completed the first stage of what will ultimately be a five-pier extension of its iconic Portland Marina, which was used as the main berthing facility for sailing events during the 2012 London Olympics. Located behind its breakwater, the marina was built by Walcon Marine in 2009 to a very high specification and has always had plenty of space for expansion. Walcon has now returned to the site, adding nearly 300 berths to the 250 already in place. The work is being carried out in
phases. Early last year, Walcon extended the first right-hand, single- sided pier/walkway (pier A) of the central walkway out to the breakwater, added the first section of the new back walkway that will run alongside the breakwater and then added a second, completely new pier (pier B) running parallel with the first. So far, 13 finger berths for boats up to 8 metres have been fitted to pier B and further pontoons will be added as demand requires. The remaining three piers and
their fingers will be installed on the same basis. The piling was undertaken by the Walcon Wizard barge. These latest works conform to the original premium quality of the marina, using Walcon’s System 21 pontoons with sustainable timber decking. The extension to pier A and the new back walkway running along the breakwater are in keeping with the existing walkways in being double width (3.3 metres), with services installed along a central duct. This allows much more space for gear and

equipment being trans-shipped than is usual for a marina of this size. Other notable features include the
outermost pontoons, intended to provide berthing for larger yachts, having a freeboard of 650 mm versus the conventional 500 mm to allow owners and crew to embark and disembark from their boats more easily, and an innovative bridge linking the marina to the shore, which was also constructed by Walcon. The design effectively fixes it at each end to a section of decking that moves
as a single piece as the walkway rises and falls in response to the tides. The decking sections attached to the head and foot of the bridge move freely on hidden runners, giving a smooth transition from shore to marina, free of obstacles, steps or other hazards. “Walcon has, as always, been a
reliable and professional partner,” said Lucas Shotts, Director, Dean & Reddyhoff. “They delivered the project on time and on budget and we look forward to continue working with them now and in the future.”
