Aid to caulking teak decks

Primer for propellers

A

transparent, low-viscosity, single component adhesion promoter that is designated Department

of Trade non-hazardous has been introduced by Teakdecking Systems Inc. TDS Adhesion Promoter is used to help improve the adhesion of the company’s SIS440 teak deck caulk to areas where it can be difficult to achieve a good bond such as butt joints, the painted areas of a coach-house, around deck fittings and winches. The promoter can also be used in emergency situations where the moisture content of the wood is suspected of being higher than recommended

for caulking. It is available in 0.9 and 3.78 litre

tins, with a shelf life of 18 months from the date of production, and has a spreading rate of 8-10 sq m per litre The manufacturer advises that

the container should be kept tightly closed when not in use and if not all the promoter is finished, then the screw-on lid and the aperture of the tin should be thoroughly cleaned as residue left on the inside of the lid will make re-opening difficult or impossible. Providing boatyards with a proven solution to a common issue – fouling of the propeller due to adhesion failure between the primer and either the substrate or the anti-fouling – Propeller Primer was recently launched by International Yacht Paints, an AkzoNobel company. Propeller Primer is a water-based primer, specifically formulated to provide outstanding adhesion through Dual-Activated Bonding Technology, allowing anti-fouling solutions such as Trilux 33 and Trilux Prop O Drev to remain on the propeller for up to a whole season.

Dual-Activated Bonding

Technology uses an innovative self-crosslinking polymer matrix to form a tough bond with a range of different substrates. When over- coated with the recommended International Yacht Paints anti- fouling, the polymer matrix bonds with the anti-fouling to give a unified coating system that resists dynamic and cavitation forces to protect propellers and underwater metals from build-up of fouling. This technology has been tested and proven through multiple customer trials, including a Plymouth Pilot 25 workboat called the Samson, which is frequently used in conditions where fouling rates are high.
