Harriet Tubman will be honored with a new museum dedicated to preserving her life and history in Cape May. Harriet Tubman Mu- seum will be located next to the historic Macedonia Baptist Church. Cape May was host to many people critical in the fight against slavery. Tubman, one of the most famous leaders of the Underground Railroad, established a headquarters there in the 1850s. She and other abolitionists in Cape May earned money by working in hotels and for local families to fund their courageous rescue trips leading others to freedom.
On display will be unique Underground Railroad items and African American art, including a collection of several modern pieces from the late Rev. Robert Davis, the longtime pastor of Macedo- nia Baptist who died in 2015. The museum is slated for a 2020 opening, which will coincide with Tubman’s 200th birthday, or at least the one reflected on her gravestone, as she wasn’t positive when she was born.
