and I have him as an adult in the book. The road goes on, you know.
You’ve got him and Britney Oakley when they were on the Brothers and Sisters album cover. That’s so cool. I really like some of those at the end of the book too, because I love Warren Hayes, some of them you’ve got him making what I call the “Blues face,” like a contorted face when you playing guitar. Right.
You got one of Derek doing that too, which is really cool. Yeah and rare, cause Derek doesn’t make any faces. Gregg told me one time, or maybe it was Alan Paul that told me, somebody told me that Gregg felt that Derek was actually the reincarnation of Duane.
I’ve heard that for years. Might be! Yeah, maybe.
It’s possible, anything’s possible. We don’t know Right. Another Allman story. Butch told me a story once how the band had come of a plane or something from somewhere and Duane was the first one off and he started getting ha- rassed by these two redneck trucker type characters. “Hey pretty boy, hey blondie, hey blue eyes,” ya know. Then he gets into the limo and rolls the window up and they are still taunting him. They didn’t figure Dickey Betts was coming off the plane. Dickey comes off, the rest of the band members come off, the road crew comes off and Dickey takes a look at the situation going down and says If you want to fight with somebody, you can fight with me. And they looked at this little wiry character and said, “Yeah right, you little punk.” And Dickey kicked both of their asses and left them both bloody on the floor at the airport and then the band went about their
way. He was an expert in Karate and Kung Fu and all that stuff. He knew how to fight. You didn’t want to be on the opposite end of Dickey’s anger, not the receiving end. Here’s another little tidbit for you. I
just did an album cover for the Marshall Tucker band that was released a couple of months ago. It was an album from 1978, New Year’s eve in New Orleans.
Oh yeah, you did the picture on that, I’ve got that LP. Man, I didn’t you did that. I did all the pictures, look at the back cover, it will tell you Sidney Smith photography All photos by Sidney. And I shot all those photos on the album, inside and out and so, there ya go. What I didn’t get credit for back in the day, I finally got credit for it now
Well thats good, yeah! I was glad that they put that out, that was a good show. Of course, back then, the original Mar- shall Tucker band they were really great, ya know, the original smoked! For sure.
They were tight. Everybody played the freaking Warehouse man, I don’t know, there must be a book some- where about that place cause, there’s got to because… There isn’t a book unfortunately. That was another thing people wanted me to do was put a book together of all the bands that I shot at the Warehouse, which that’s a possi- bility, but once again we are in a new era, a new generation and you know, a lot of these bands aren’t around anymore and a lot of them have been completely forgotten and that’s a shame, but it is what it is. •
