William Muir Knox Marshall was commissioned into the Gordon Highlanders, and served with them as a Captain in South Africa during the Boer War (entitled to the Queen’s South Africa Medal with clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Laing’s Nek, and Belfast; and the King’s South Africa Medal with two clasps). Whilst in South Africa he served briefly on the panel of judges at the trial of Lieutenant Harry ‘Breaker’ Morant, in what was the most celebrated court martial of the Boer War.


Marshall subsequently served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 14 August 1914, and for his services with the British Expeditionary Force he was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 17 February 1915), and was appointed a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honour ‘for gallantry during the operations between 21 and 30 August 1914’ (London Gazette 3 November 1914). Advanced Major, he died in Sandwich, Kent, in 1939.

Henry George Alfred Baker was born in Ipswich, Suffolk, and attested there for the Machine Gun Corps. He served with the 135th Company during the Great War in Mesopotamia, and in India, and died on 28 December 1917. He is buried in Mhow New Cemetery, India.


Henry William Abrahams served with the 10th Company, Machine Gun Corps during the Great War on the Western Front, and was killed in action on 14 October 1917. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


Charles Holt attested for the Machine Gun Corps at Halifax, Yorkshire, and served with the 62nd Company during the Great War on the Western Front. He died of wounds on 1 June 1917, and is buried in the Sunken Road Cemetery, Boisleux-St. Marc, France.


Walter Francis Miseman was born in Bridgewater and attested for the Machine Gun Corps. He served with the 53rd Company during the Great War on the Western Front, and was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme on 19 July 1916. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France..

Henry William Groombridge was born in Hammersmith, London, on 4 August 1894, and joined the Royal Naval Air Service on 4 May 1915. He served during the Great War initially at home, and then for the remainder of the War at the Seaplane Base, Malta, from 11 August 1916. He transferred to the Royal Air Force on its formation on 1 April 1918, and was promoted Sergeant on 27 July 1918. In addition to being Mentioned in Despatches, for his services in conjunction with the Italian Forces at Misurata he was additionally awarded the Libyan Campaign Medal by the King of Italy (London Gazette 15 July 1919), one of only 5 British Officers and 7 Other Ranks to receive the Medal.


Note: This is the recipient’s full British entitlement- having served only at ‘home’ (which included Malta) he was only entitled to the British War Medal.

Alfred Edward Pettitt was born in Kensington, London, and attested for the Machine Gun Corps. He served with the 66th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front, and died of wounds on 7 April 1918. He is buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.
