Harry Sykes served during the Great War on the Western Front with the Royal Garrison Artillery from 23 October 1915 and was discharged to the Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 10 March 1919. He re-attested for service with the Royal Artillery in 1930 and served with them during the Second War achieving the rank of Warrant Officer Class 2. He was discharged on 14 October 1942 under King’s Regulations Para 390 (xvi) – “ceasing to fulfil Army physical requirements”.

Montague Downe Barton, a native of Wimbledon, was one of the original attesters for the 23rd (1st Sportsman) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 16 November 1915. He died in 1941.

Eric Hulks was born in Shenley, Hertfordshire, in 1896, and attested for the Royal Fusiliers on 1 September 1914. He served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 10 March 1915, before transferring to the Royal Flying Corps on 31 January 1917. He was commissioned Flying Officer (Administration and Special Duties Branch), Royal Air Force on 31 May 1941, and was promoted Flight Lieutenant in the Technical Branch on 27 September 1944. He retired on 13 July 1948, and was granted the rank of Squadron Leader. He died in Brighton in 1955.

George Nockles was born in Hackney, London, and attested for the Royal Fusiliers at Dalston, London. He served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War in the Gallipoli theatre of War from 25 April 1915, and was killed in action on 5 June 1915. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey.


James Nockles was born in Hackney, London, and attested for the Scots Guards at Finsbury, London. He served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front, and was killed in action on 30 January 1918. He is buried in Fampoux British Cemetery, France.

John King was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Lincolnshire Regiment, and served with the 7th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 21 July 1915, being twice Mentioned in Despatches. Sold with the recipient’s two original Mentioned in Despatches Certificates.
