Arthur Ingham was born in Burnley in 1895, the son of Jonas Ingham, a sub postmaster and shopkeeper. A postman in civilian life, he enlisted in the 6th T.A. battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment on 11 December 1915 and embarked for Mesopotamia in July 1916. He spent the duration of the War in this Theatre and was discharged in 1919. On discharge he immediately re-enlisted in Basra for a further 4 years service, serving in India and Jamaica, before finally being discharged in 1923.


Returning to the UK, he re-joined the Post Office in 1924. Upon the outbreak of the Second War Ingham re-enlisted, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, serving in Africa from December 1942 until May 1944. Discharged in 1946, he immediately re-enlisted in the Royal Engineers Postal Section, and served with them in Germany and the U.K. until 1952, when he finally left the Army. On returning to civilian life Ingham re-joined the Post Office, and was employed as a postman in Norwich, being awarded the Imperial Service Medal upon his retirement in 1957 (London Gazette 17 December 1957). He died in 1961 at the age of 66.

John Augustus Grant was born in 1897 at Boyn Hill, Maidenhead, Berkshire. He attested for the Royal Berkshire Regiment on 11 February 1916 and was posted to the 3rd Battalion on 25 August 1916, arriving with them on the Western Front on 8 December 1916. He suffered a gun shot wound to the head on 12 November 1917 and returned to England, receiving treatment at Coulter Hospital in London. He was discharged to furlough at the Command Depot and upon his recuperation he returned to his Battalion in France, immediately transferring to the 10th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment.


On 23 June 1916 he was posted to the 9th Cheshires and was serving with them when he died of wounds received in action on 5 November 1918. He is buried in Awoingt British Cemetery, France.


A Croix de Guerre was listed among the articles of private property belonging to Private Grant forwarded by the Officer in charge of Infantry Records to his mother, Kate Grant, on 3 April 1919.

John Albert Scott was born in Chatham and attested for the Machine Gun Corps. He served with the 55th Battalion during the Great War, and was killed in action on 9 April 1918. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France.
