THE WONDERFUL AND COMPUTERS

WORLD OF DIGITAL

Wi-Fi - it’s everywhere! Well, generally it’s everywhere except where you want it!

In older houses, the main telephone socket is usually in the front hall or at the nearest point of access to your house from the local telegraph pole, making it easy for the telephone engineer to install your landline. Most of us don’t use a wired phone, instead we have battery operated cordless phones that allow you to walk and talk. However, our Wi- Fi router even now remains firmly and irrevocably attached to the landline master socket in almost all cases. If your home office is in the loft, at the other end of your house, or in your garden room, then this presents a problem since the Wi-Fi router in many cases won’t have sufficient power to reach you. What can you do?

Well don’t go signing up to a 24-month contract offered by some providers under the pretence that if you sign up for this amazing deal, they will, for the price of a body part guarantee you Wi-Fi throughout your home. It’s an expensive solution to fix a not very difficult problem. The easy fix is a powerline Wi-Fi extender. These inexpensive devices are generally plug and play and will use the earth wire in your household electrics to transmit your broadband signal around the ring main in your home. Simply plug the tethered one in near your router and plug the Wi-Fi transmitter in at the place in your house where the Wi-Fi doesn’t work. Easy - and generally less than fifty pounds to sort. It’s worth noting however, that if you have slow Broadband, things will not improve using this fix and if you have two ring mains it may not work. In these rare instances there are other solutions to consider, so yell if you need advice.

Things to remember as we head into the New Year:

Windows 7 end of life phase begins on 14th January 2020. It may not mean you need a new PC but it may be an opportunity to upgrade and update your current machine, for instance adding more Ram or an SSD (Solid State Drive) to replace your old and slow HDD (Hard Disk Drive). This is a relatively inexpensive thing to do compared to purchasing a new machine, again shout if you need advice.

I think the consumer buzz word for 2020 will be Integration. Apple has been doing it for years but Microsoft are catching up: for instance being able to receive and reply to text messages on your phone, PC and tablet, making phone calls from devices other than your phone, storing all your data, messages, photos in a place, accessible from every device.
