The events of December 2019 have certainly clarified some political issues but others remain as shrouded in mist as ever, most noticeably any coherent strategy concerning the process of the funding of ‘Elderly Care’. What is apparent is that the status quo is not going to change any time soon. This means that if you have in your estate more than £14,250 of assets, which includes the value of your home if you own it, then you will pay for your Care should you need it.

Broadly speaking, within any family the probability that at least one person will need Care is reasonably high. The effect of this on the family finances is likely to be very considerable, particularly in relation to the provision of an inheritance to children and or grandchildren. The difference might enable them to go to university, to buy a home or simply to have lives in which they are not constantly stressed by financial pressures.

This is why doing some forward planning is so important. Estate or Inheritance Planning is the means by which it is possible to safeguard family assets, be they property or savings. Sensible planning now that puts in place legal documents that comprehensively safeguard assets can have profound financial benefits to the finances of loved ones in the future.

I am now in my 15th year of providing advice and documentation for people all over Cumbria. I offer home based consultations for which I do not charge, you only pay for any legal documentation that you desire to put in place and that is relevant to you. I offer a comprehensive and bespoke service and I personally oversee all document signings by my clients. All documentation is provided by Co-op Legal Services, a company regulated by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority. If you are a Co- op Member you get 5% of your spend back onto your Co-op card and for Co-op Funeral Plans 5% is deducted from the price.

Our first meeting of 2020 was an entertaining talk by Paul and Gary from Allerdale Borough Council about our local recycling scheme.

They highlighted the damage caused, particularly to marine life, by single use plastics and gave advice about how to cut down on its use. The mantra to remember is Reduce and Reuse! Recycling is the last option. They stressed the importance of making sure that anything recycled in the paper and green recycling bins must be clean and not contaminated with food residue. Grease on pizza boxes can contaminate a whole bale of recycled paper. Plastic pots and bottles should be washed and squashed. The council website, ‘Recycle for Cumbria’ has lots of helpful

information. General domestic waste is all taken to Hespin Wood, the mechanical, biological treatment (MBT) plant in Carlisle. It is shredded, dried and sorted on drums, drives and trommels, so that only 12.5% goes into landfill and the rest is recycled. The president, Amanda Durkan, thanked Paul and Gary for a brilliant talk.

The competition for a recycled item was won by Chrissie Vietch and Andrea Cameron was second. The raffle was won by Anne Burton.

On 12th February, we will be celebrating the Embleton WI 96th birthday, with a meal at the Manor House in Cockermouth. On 11th March, Emma Loveridge from NatWest will be talking about Financial Scams.

Meetings are held at 7.30pm at the village hall on the second Wednesday of each month. We are always pleased to welcome guests and new members. Please get in touch with our secretary, Joanna South on 01900 828110 for more information.
