V.P.E.F Limited

Name: Nigel Pugh

Company: Impact Aerial Limited

Job Title: Managing director

What does your company do? We are Civil Aviation-approved commercial drone operators providing professional aerial photography, video and specialist technical surveys and inspections.

How did it all start? I have always had a love of gadgets and tech, and I’d spent over 25 years working for US listed software companies. Forming Impact Aerial seemed like a natural choice allowing me to combine what I love into a commercial business.

What’s your greatest achievement so far? Personally privileged to be one of only eight businesses that was chosen by Beta Den Cohort 2.0, Worcestershire’s first dedicated tech accelerator for entrepreneurs and scale up businesses.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken – and did it work out? It has to be starting my own business rather than working for another large software corporation, it’s going well and we are on a journey that is evolving.

If you could turn the clock back, what would you do differently? Although the industry is still in its infancy, if I could turn the clock back, I would have probably taken the leap into my own business earlier than I did.

What has surprised you most in your job? The lack of awareness for the drone code, the rules and laws that already exist. We come across situations where customers are having work carried out by illegal operators which means that there

is no public liability Insurance in place and the hiring client puts themselves at unnecessary risk of prosecution.

What advice would you give to someone starting out? Be prepared for lots of hard work and look at specialising in a particular area. Demonstrate your value and don’t de-value your services.

Which business do you most admire? I admire JLR for the risk they have taken in replacing a world famous off-road icon with the release of the new 2020 Defender.

What exciting projects is your business working on? We are developing a drone software platform which is why the Beta Den Cohort 2.0 tech accelerator programme was so important to us.

What made you join Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and how are you making use of your membership? As a start-up we needed a platform to start raising the awareness of our business and the drone industry in general with a focus on B2B. We have exhibited at a number

of Chamber Expos, including the STEM Expo at Millennium Point at the start of the year. We attend business briefings across the Greater Birmingham Chamber as well as attend social networking events which broadens our reach and introduces us to new contacts and businesses.
