Properties to be hit by £2,000 waste bill
Hundreds of rural properties in the Burton area could be facing massive bills to replace septic tanks, a local waste management company has warned. Each property could be forced to spend
around £2,000 replacing the septic tank, in order to meet new rules governing the discharge of waste water from these devices. Septic tanks allow the disposal of waste
water from properties and are widely used in areas that have a poor drainage system or are not connected to the mains sewage network. They work by micro-organisms breaking
down the waste water in an underground tank, and are predominantly used in rural areas. The new rules governing their use come
into force on 1 January next year, according to Burton-based waste management firm Mid-Counties Waste. Mid-Counties business development
manager Warren Lewis said that the issue which the new rules addressed was the discharge from septic tanks ‘directly to surface water’ – this is where the waste water produced by the underground tank is allowed to flow into a ditch or a stream, rather a specially prepared ‘drainage field’. A drainage field allows bacteria in the soil
to complete the decomposition of any matter that might remain in the waste water, which, despite the name, is actually for the most part clean water. Mr Lewis said: “The legislation is due to
pollution into the ground chemicals that we put down our toilets have been polluting the ground around the soakaways and in to our water systems “The cost will be on a property basis, the
size of the treatment plant you have to install depends on the amount of people that can live in that property.”
Business Growth event hailed a huge success
A Chamber-backed conference aimed at boosting the fortunes of small businesses in Burton has been hailed a massive success. Last month’s Business Growth Conference – at
Repton School – was the fourth organised by not-for-profit Burton Small Business. The event focused on advice and support
available for small businesses battling for survival in the current challenging climate, and also featured a number of key speakers, including a young millionaire and the star of TV’s ‘Gogglebox’, who is himself a successful businessman. The latter is Baasit Siddiqui, who runs Siddiqui
Education, and he spoke about the importance of lifelong learning and how his experiences have shaped and grown his business.
‘Business support is important now more than ever’
The young millionaire is entrepreneur Joe
Burns, who was just 21 when he sold his first business for £1m. The conference also heard from performance
psychologist Dr Phillip Clarke, who works with elite athletes including future Olympians, and he focused on the lessons businesses can learn from elite competitors on reaching their potential. Organiser Cheryl Morris, of Creative Word PR,
said: “Business support is important now more than ever. There are so many innovative and interesting SMEs in this country and this entrepreneurial spirit should be celebrated and encouraged. “The Business Growth Conference brings
together like minded organisations and businesses to provide advice, tips and support to help nurture new and existing talent – helping companies to thrive. “Focused on how you can grow a business at
any stage it was great to work with the Chamber of Commerce in showcasing the support they offer.”

Cheryl Morris: Business support is important
Chamber director Chris Plant said: “The
Chamber was delighted to support the conference, it is a great way to bring local businesses to network and also share best practise. The seminars that were included were a great way for business owners to pick up advice and guidance. “Both the Chamber and the Growth Hub were
on hand to offer business support, advice on Brexit, and access to finance and business processes. The Chamber also has a wealth of services, events and products to help businesses grow, and this is available all year round. “The Business Growth Conference was a huge
success and we are already looking forward to next year’s event.”
Sponsors needed for swan trail
Businesses in Burton are being asked to sponsor a swan sculpture trail, which will adorn the streets of the town next summer. It is hoped that the trail will encourage visitors
to the town, and raise its profile. The trail will feature a number of colourful wooden swan sculptures, which will appear at various key places along the way. It is these sculptures that the trail organisers
are hoping businesses will sponsor. Project manager Tilley Bancroft said: “Businesses and organisations are being invited
48 CHAMBERLINK November 2019
to sponsor one of our uniquely-designed swans, which will sit on a base bearing the sponsor’s name, logo and details. “Established and emerging artists will be
invited to submit designs for our swans. Sponsors will be able to choose their favourite, from the approved designs, and then start to make a splash and raise their profile in the town as a vital part of the swan sculpture trail.” The swan sculptures will be auctioned off at
the end of the summer to raise cash for the local YMCA.
