Battery plan powers up Ark’s EcoPledge support
A video production firm has vowed to rethink how it disposes of alkaline batteries as part of the Sutton Coldfield Chamber’s EcoPledge. Ark Media’s film crews use alkaline batteries
to power radio microphones. As a result the firm has built up a collection
of redundant batteries, which it is planning to recycle in a more sustainable manner. When taken to landfills, alkaline batteries
release harmful metals, causing contamination to water and soils. Additionally, incineration of batteries can add
to air pollution. Managing director Phil Arkinstall said: “We
are aware of how many batteries we get through each week, and the effects that alkaline batteries have on the environment when thrown into a landfill. “However, we were unsure of what else we
could do with them so kept them in a basket in the office. “Unfortunately, rechargeable batteries are
not always an option given their durability and the fact that we often film over long periods of time. “Just this small change will help us to make a
bigger difference, but also, making this small change has made us more aware of what else we can recycle as a business.” A number of firms
have signed up to the EcoPledge, including PLOTT Creative, Smith Cooper, the Sutton Coldfield Community Games and Sutton Coldfield YMCA.

Auriga Services, the Sutton Coldfield-based public benefit entity, has now helped more than two million people pay their utility bills. Auriga’s financial assistance, advice and grants
have proved to be of particular benefit to those in vulnerable situations, including people who require greater support in the home because of an illness or disabilities. Chief executive Mark Abrams said: “It’s
fantastic news that we have smashed our target of helping two million people by 2020 and, importantly, how we’ve collaboratively improved
the lives and financial wellbeing of so many people who were struggling or who needed extra support to gain their correct benefit entitlements.”
PLOTT Creative has pledged its support for the YMCA Sleep Easy event in Sutton Coldfield next year by becoming the main sponsor. The PLOTT team will be among those
swapping their beds for boxes on Friday 27 March, in a bid to raise funds for YMCA Sutton Coldfield. Anna Plotnek, managing director of PLOTT
Creative, said: “We’re always proud to support local causes - particularly ones that address such important social issues affecting so many.”
An ‘EcoPledge’ event hosted by the Sutton Coldfield Chamber on 7 November aims to inspire firms to make changes to their operations for the good of the environment. Charlotte Watkivs of TEDTalks and Wesleyan’s

about the disappearing trade and the empty units, securing a positive future for the town centre is beyond the parameters of one single organisation’s power. In 2018, the Sutton Coldfield Town Centre
Regeneration Partnership (TCRP) was set up, enabling close working relationships between the Town Council, Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, Birmingham City Council, community groups, Sutton Coldfield Business Improvement District, Transport for West Midlands and Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership. The TCRP is also engaging with local land owners, to help create the new vision. As we move into the last two months of
2019, work will begin on the first phase of our Town Centre Masterplan. Using the £150,000 secured through the TCRP by the Town Council, GBSLEP and Sutton Coldfield BID, the first phase will seek vital feedback from residents, community groups, local businesses and key partners, with public engagement expected to take place in early 2020. We all know that our Royal Town is a
great place to live and work and what the masterplan will provide is the detail the Sutton Coldfield TCRP needs to positively carve out a reimagined town centre, that is fit for the future.
