Paper No. 18: Improving Burnout of Printed Patterns in Investment Casting Shells Tom Mueller, Mueller Additive Manufacturing Solutions
Printed patterns have become the standard method for creating prototype investment castings. With the exception of printed wax patterns, printed patterns will not melt out in the autoclave. Instead, they must be burned out in an oven. While burning out a pattern seems straightforward, many foundries have found that achieving a clean burnout is complicated, especially given the limited equipment they have. Incomplete combustion can leave a tarry residue in the shell that results in negative defects on the surface of the casting. Ash remaining after combustion can result in gas related surface defects. Some of the defects can be avoided by venting the shell during combustion and cooling down the shell to clean out ash and patch vents after the burnout. However, the workaround adds time, cost and risk to the casting process.
