Areas of beauty

Hackney Marshes On the edge of the River Teign, Footpath No. 1, accessed from the Passage House Inn car park via Hackney Lane or Footpath no 12 leading down from Ware Barton or from Greenhill Way Footpath No. 1/1A (which is accessible to all), you will find the Hackney Marshes Nature Reserve. An area of natural beauty with a variety of wildlife inhabitants, including ducks, herons, swans, moorhens, kingfishers, birds of prey and even rabbits hopping around the borders.

The marshes are owned by Teignbridge District Council and maintained by their Rangers. Enjoying a picnic, relaxing on benches provided or taking a stroll along the tidal pathway past the ruined hamlet of Hackney towards the Passage House Inn, which once played host to clergymen waiting to cross the tidal ford in their travels to and from Torre Abbey, can be most enjoyable, although may be impassable during high tides. Whilst wandering around you may even find the wood carved animals and birds. Visitors to the Passage House Hotel are also close to the river bank so can enjoy a leisurely stroll at any time of the

day. A pathway/cycle track which runs from the marshes, along the back of the Racecourse leads to the Town Quay Bridge opened in 2013, spanning 90 metres, made of steel cable-stay white construction, it can be seen from many areas around. Suitable for bicycles and pedestrians, the bridge leads to both Forde Road and Teign Road in Newton Abbot and is an ideal safer route than using the roads for cyclists in particular and forms part of a cycling network in Teignbridge. Please note that the footpath/cycle way will not be open on race days.

Oakford Lawn A hidden place of tranquillity, Oakford Lawn is a beautiful 3 acre area of lawn boasting old and new trees, accessi- ble to all abilities with a new paved pathway running from one end to the other as well as into an additional dog-free gated zone, the ‘History Garden’ featuring history boards, picnic benches, trees and a raised planter.

The lawn itself provides a vast area of old and newly planted trees, benches, picnics benches, bins and a notice board. Oakford Lawn can be accessed through the lane opposite Oakford Service Station as well as through the pathway leading off Broadway Road.

Oakford Lawn is owned by the ‘King- steignton Village Trust’ and maintained by

Kingsteignton Town Council. The lawn hosts annual events such as the King’s Teignton Ram Roasting Fair which has been held on the site since 1904, Kingsteignton Street Market and Classic Car Show and has in recent years been host to the Kingsteignton Garden, Craft & Hobby Fayre.
