Council commitment to county climate declaration


TEIGNBRIDGE District Council is based at Forde House, Brunel Road, Newton Abbot.


The district


covers an area of some 260 square miles, (67,387 hectares), serving a population of 127,360 in some 54,000 households (Census 2011), of which 22,581 live in Newton Abbot and 8,367 in Kingsteignton. It has 47 councillors in 24 wards, comprising 26 Lib. Dem. (majority), 12 Con. and 6 Ind. Also, a newly formed group of 3 councillors representing ‘Newton Says No’. Its Chairman is Cllr Richard Keeling (Liberal Democrat, Chudleigh), Vice Chair is Cllr John Petherick (Liberal Democrat, Dawlish South West) and leader of the Council is Cllr Gordon Hook, (Lib Dem, Buckland & Milber). Teignbridge District Council’s Managing Director is Phil Shears. It is named after the old Teignbridge Hundred, comprising 32 ancient administrative parishes, and was created in 1974 after a local government merging of urban and rural district councils.


Teignbridge scoops ‘Blue Flag Awards’


For the first time Teignmouth has received the prestigious Blue Flag award and joins Dawlish Warren, celebrating its own 21st consecutive year, in being recognised as amongst the best beaches in the UK.


Environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy also announced that Coryton Cove in Dawlish, Dawlish Town Beach and Ness Cove have retained their Seaside Awards. The independently assessed seal of approval is awarded to beaches which achieve the highest quality of standards, excellent cleanliness, safe access and appropriate signage.

Phil Shears signed the declaration which sets out an ambition to tackle climate change across Devon by doing so, Teignbridge has committed to supporting a raft of measures and initiatives including lobbying government to prioritise decarbonisation and to provide the resources and funding necessary to speed up the transition to becoming a carbon neutral and resilient economy and society. Climate change is recognised as a cross-cutting strategic issue that impacts on all of Teignbridge’s Council Strategy projects and as such has its own Portfolio Holder lead, Cllr Jackie Hook.
