Getting a handle on tying shoelaces, back- to-school basics, make a date to dress up for Roald Dahl Day, plus the chance to win a child’s mini portrait session and more…
WHY DOES PIGEON WHOOPSEY-
SPLUNKERS! It was the Royal Shakespeare Company who fi rst transformed Roald Dahl’s Matilda into the musical we now know and love. The offi cial Roald Dahl Day takes place every year on 13th September on the birth date of the world’s zaniest storyteller who gave us The BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Twits and Fantastic Mr Fox. If Roald Dahl were alive today, he’d be 102 this year. The entire month will be fi lled with many
different activities, taking place all over the world, including Dahlicious Dress-up Day when children go to school dressed up as their favourite character – all in aid of Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity.

HAVE TO GO TO SCHOOL? Brand-new for this term and perfect for those starting school or nursery is Mo Willems’ latest tale in his feathery series – The Pigeon Has to Go to School! But do YOU think he should go? Why does the Pigeon have to go to school? He already knows everything! Well ... almost everything. And what if he doesn’t like it? What if the teacher doesn’t like him? I mean, what if he learns too much? • Published by Walker Books, RRP £6.99.
Sending little ones off to “big school” for the fi rst time can feel daunting. Here are our TOP FIVE TIPS for making the transition go smoothly:
Prepare for starting school challenges almost everything from bags and pencil
1. As every teacher will tell you, if it’s worth keeping, it’s worth labelling! Iron- on tapes from NameItLabels or adhesive labels from Stickins are easy to apply and can be used on
cases to water bottles and Plimsolls. 2. Break in new school shoes by wearing them around the house for a week or so before term begins.
3. Choose packed lunch items at the supermarket with your child so you can be sure their lunchbox will contain healthy, exciting food they actually enjoy eating. 4. Don’t start organising play dates or signing up to after-school clubs straight away. Reception-aged children will be exhausted during the fi rst term at school and there is plenty of time
to be sociable further down the line. 5. If your child’s bedtime routine has slipped over the summer holidays, it’s worth getting it back on track before the new school term starts. There is nothing worse than having to wake sleepy children on a school day – especially when settling into a new routine.
