Chains of command

At the annual Presidential Handover of Tonbridge Rotary Club, Sonia Williams, outgoing president, passed her chain of office to Phil Higgins (pictured), who then passed on chains of office to Peter Ruck, the new president-elect, and Barry Ednie, the incoming vice-president. The Club was chartered in 1924 and each year has appointed a different president. No president has held the office for more than a year, so there have been 94 different holders of the office – and the Club is looking forward to celebrating its centenary in five year’s time.

Brian lives the high life!

Tunbridge Wells resident Brian Bissell, past president of the Insurance Institute of Royal Tunbridge Wells, recently abseiled the 150m Barclays Canary Wharf in aid of the Lord Mayor’s Appeal, which supports three inspirational charities – Place2Be (which enables schools in London to provide children with access to mental health), OnSide Youth Zones (which helps transform lives and communities in areas of deprivation) and the Samaritans. Donations are still being received at Brian’s Just Giving link justgiving. com/fundraising/brian-bissell

Local country parks best in Britain

Keep Britain Tidy has announced a record- breaking number of award-winning parks and green spaces for 2019, with Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council’s two country parks, Haysden and Leybourne Lakes, being among the very best in the UK – and that’s official! The parks are included

in a record-breaking 1,582 parks and green

spaces that have received a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space. The award recognises

and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country and a Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.
