@CanterburyIndex BUSINESS NEWS Largest office deal in Kent

In what is believed to be the largest office deal in Kent in the last 18 months, Covea Insurance has renewed the lease on its offices in Kings Hill, West Malling. The company, which is part of the Paris-based Covea mutual insurance group, moved into the whole of the 52,000sq ft three-storey building on the business park 13 years ago, where it employs more than 400 people. Covea Insurance offers commercial, motor, high net worth,

property, life and protection insurance and in total has more than two million policyholders generating over £765 million in premiums. It employs around 2,000 staff in its eight UK offices. “Covea Insurance is one of the larger employers in Kings Hill and we are delighted it has recommitted to Kent,” said Caroline Binns of Kings Hill developer Liberty Property Trust. “We will be undertaking extensive works to refurbish the building, with them in situ, to ensure that it is energy efficient and fit for purpose for another 15 years.” Kings Hill is home to more than 250 businesses, including headquarters and regional offices for some of the UK’s best- known names. Its range of office specifications and sizes make it an attractive location for large and smaller businesses alike. • Visit kings-hill.com

Top award for local fruit growers who take a “whole farm” approach to conservation

NEWS IN BRIEF

• Nuffield Health has picked up the award for Private Hospital Group of the Year for the third time at the Health Investor Awards 2019. The award is designed to recognise outstanding contribution to healthcare over the past 12 months, through innovation and excellence in healthcare products and services. Nuffield Health was selected from a finalist group of five private hospital groups within the UK. • Kent Life in Maidstone has received the award for best Leisure & Tourism Business at the Maidstone Business Awards ceremony (left) held at the Mercure Maidstone Great Danes Hotel. Kent Life is a popular attraction, which is open all year where family fun and heritage sit side by side. • Tracy Allison has been appointed as chief executive of West Kent Housing Association to replace Frank Czarnowski, who retires at the end of the year. Tracy (left) is currently deputy chief executive of Hyde Housing Group with responsibility for the Group Directorate of Transformation and Business Services. She was recruited following an open and rigorous recruitment process that involved staff, board members and residents.

Fruit growers who take a “whole farm” approach to conservation, and where staff are encouraged to photograph species sightings, have been honoured with a top award. Hugh Lowe Farms, based in Mereworth between Maidstone and Tonbridge, has been presented with the CLA Emsden Trophy (below), which recognises conservation efforts in Kent. The business, which specialises in growing strawberries, raspberries and blackberries, was nominated by FWAG South East and picked up the award at an event supported by BTF Partnership and Cripps Pemberton Greenish. It was praised for taking a “whole farm”

approach to its environment, looking at the impact of water, energy and plastic use, soil and crop protection, and waste management, as well as wildlife conservation. More than 15% of the 700 ha soft fruit and arable farm is managed for wildlife, including field margins, permanent grassland with low inputs, nectar flower and wild bird mixes, as well as features such as hedges, woodlands, ditches and reservoirs.
