School report
A DESIGN CHALLENGE!
There’s nothing that motivates students as much as a challenge. Competition can be fun, rather than exams or tests, which are sometimes daunting. The curriculum, as we all know, is crammed but there are certain subjects that still need to be included – and a challenge offers a great way to inspire.
Step forward Design Ventura! It’s an annual design and enterprise competition for pupils of state and independent schools in Years 9, 10 and 11 (aged 13- 16). Organised by the Design Museum, London, the task set to students is to design a new product for the museum shop. Last year, more than 13,000 pupils took part and entries included simple yet effective designs for bookmarks, door signs, sets of feet to hold birthday cards, calendars incorporating fun facts, a maths teaser cube, simple science kit and even a new take on the card game of Snap that involves actions.
The competition supports the delivery of design and technology in schools. There are free teacher CPD sessions, offered to teachers of state schools, free workshops supported by design and industry professionals and many online resources. • Schools need to register at
ventura.designmuseum.org. The competition entry deadline is 13th November 2019.
