BRONZE EXPEDITION

A

s we go to press our Year 9s are currently busily preparing for their very first experience of the

Duke of Edinburgh expedition which takes place during Activity Week. An outstanding 39 students (a third of the year group!) have voluntarily signed up to take place in this globally recognised award.

The expedition will take place on Monday 15th

– Tuesday 16th July 2019,

Students will meet staff at Knockholt Station and camp at Cudham Shaws Campsite and walking around the local area of Downe and Knockholt.

Enrichment this term has seen the students familiarising themselves with the walking routes, organising their tents and working on their communication skills. Next week’s enrichment will see the students practice their map reading skills, so they are well prepared for their expedition.

Any Year 8 parent who is interested in their child taking part in the Bronze award from September 2019 should speak to Mr Guildford at aguildford@ arkgreenwich.org

Silver Expedition 2019 A

huge congratulations goes to our brave Year 10 students who successfully completed their

Duke of Edinburgh Silver Expedition on the south coast this term. All of the students demonstrated an incredible growth mindset in dealing with tricky weather conditions and an enormous amount of walking over their three day expedition.

Students were tasked with independently navigating their way around the local area, before assembling their own tents and cooking their own food on gas cookers. For the students to pass the assessment they must complete all this independently, without the assistance of staff.

Students finished on day three with a scenic walk along Cuckmere River down to the Birling Gap and along the Seven Sisters, before celebrating their achievement with an ice-cream as they approached the finish at Beachy Head.

Congratulations go to: Annika Bloomquist, Kristina Broeren, Joseph Ernest, Reigan Johnson-Hinds, Owen McCarthy, Thomas McCarthy, Ibukun

Okunsanya, Cameron Pearce, Jaiden Pham, Tabitha Platukyte Fletcher, Jude Taylor, Samuel Truscott-Smith and Harry Woolard. A thank you from all of the students to Mr Munday, Mr Maxted and Ms Matthews - without them, the Duke of Edinburgh Expedition would not have been possible.

Students who complete the Silver Award must complete their three individual sections before the expedition. These sections must include a minimum of one hour a week of the activity, for up to six months. This means that the students who are completing this award are having to work independently, self-regulate and most importantly, give back to their local community. The Duke of Edinburgh Award continues to be the number one ‘value-added’ scheme in the UK, and is recognised globally as an award that sets students apart from having just outstanding academic grades.

Any student who is currently Year 9 (moving into Year 10) is welcome to sign up to the Silver Award that will begin in September 2019. If you are interested, Year 9 should email Mr Guildford at aguildford@arkgreenwich.org.
