SUMMER TERM PE REPORT

T

he PE Department are well underway with their preparations for this years

Sports Day - which takes place during activities week on Thursday 18th July 2019. The event is being held at Sutcliffe Park Athletics Track with all supporters from the AGFS community welcome. Last year saw a staggering 27 new school records being set, this included eight in our newest event, the 100m hurdles. The PE department are confident that even more records will be smashed this year.

As part of the student’s preparation for this, they have undertaken a six week unit during curriculum PE on Athletics, working on improving their results to beat the competition on Sports Day.

Additionally the summer term has seen students undertake units of work in our traditional summer sports, such as Rounders and Cricket and most notably, the introduction of swimming into the curriculum for the first time. Our lucky Year 7s have been venturing to Charlton Lido for specialist swimming lessons this term, and have made outstanding progress demonstrating a true growth mindset.

Well done to all of our students who have tackled the PE curriculum this year with the right attitude, we look forward to continuing to offer a broad and balanced PE curriculum in 2019/2020.

The PE Department Sporting Success In The Community C

ongratulations to Nadia Nel (Year 10) and her family for completing a 10,000m charity race in May this year. Nadia reports on the race:

My family and I participated in a running race activity because we want to

stay healthy and fit. It is really important to do exercise and to stay active each and every day. We completed a 12km charity run, which is 2,000m over the required distance, which is a great achievement from us. The race started in Greenwich and went through Woolwich. We completed the run in 2 hours and 20 minutes, which is a big achievement for us. We are all very proud of how we did. We run each day of the week and we are not going to give up on running, cycling and tennis because we all believe in ourselves. We love doing sports as a family.

Well done Nadia! The school is always keen to hear about sporting success in the community, so please do share student achievements with us.

SPORTS Tennis Enrichment

E

very Wednesday afternoon, 20 pupils from Year 7 and 8, are taken to the tennis club on Shooters

Hill to be taught how to play tennis by a professional coach. They have really enjoyed the experience, learning lots of new skills including teamwork, communication skills, hand-eye coordination, and competitiveness.

Those who have shown progress in specific tennis skills have been given the opportunity to play against the tennis coach and/or myself.

This has been a fantastic opportunity, where pupils have learned new skills, had lots of fun and increased their fitness levels in the process.
