AGFS: GROWTH

From exciting Drama experiences, to the Step into Dance programme, ending with a Summer Musical Medley...

Nicoleta Charchaci in Year 8 gives us an insight into her experiences of dancing on this programme:

I have really enjoyed being part of the ‘Step Into Dance’ programme on a Friday afternoon where I have been part of the AGFS Street Dance Crew. Through this Miss Yandell selected me and two other students to attend a special workshop during February half term. From this I was really lucky that the Royal Academy of Dance asked me to participate in classes during the weekends in preparation for one of their shows. My time at the Royal Academy of Dance has been amazing. On my first day we created a phrase by using a warm up session which was all about how we can ‘paint’ with our body. We all travelled around the room creating movement which we developed into a phrase.

After the third day we started to create some solos. As I was injured and couldn’t really move my foot, I made a phrase using a chair which I then incorporated into my final performance. I performed this piece at Thomas Tallis School for a regional dance platform and at the Royal Academy of Dance. This experience has been a fantastic opportunity to build on my dancing skills and I have really enjoyed it. It has made me even more passionate about dance.

SUMMER MUSICAL MEDLEY T

wo months ago, students began working on a compilation musical to show on Monday 8th

July.

They will be staging snippets of Disney’s famous The Lion King, Mary Poppins and the classical musical Oliver! The music and choreography has been incredibly challenging for some of the students, but they are now beginning to get to grips with it all. Students are beginning to dedicate time to rehearsals afterschool to ensure that the show will be perfectly rehearsed.

Currently, Imri Doue is taking on the responsibility of opening the show in his

uring DDD, Year 7 experienced what it was like to ‘Make a musical’! From taking on backstage roles as designers and directors,

to on stage roles as musical theatre performers, students worked together within their form groups to devise their own original musicals.

Students spent the morning learning about key elements of a musical, watching some famous clips of musicals written by Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Cameron Mackintosh. Students then worked as a whole year group in some team building physical theatre exercises – even working in groups of eight to make moving tractors with sound effects. Their creativity was astounding.

They spent the afternoon creating their own scenes, choreography, and songs, making their own musical storyline; one form basing their piece on the films Wonder and Mean Girls, another creating their own version of ‘The Voice’ and some going as far as turning AGFS teachers into musical characters – Mr Ige being a common choice!

The designs of props and costumes were so thoughtful, and groups really did work incredibly well together to create a complete ten minute musical in only a few hours. Needless to say all of the staff involved were very proud of them, their effort and contribution, as well as talent - it appeared everyone left smiling!

role of Dodger, alongside Fejiro Okonedo as Oliver. Both boys have been working hard to learn their lines and songs, which looks like its continuously increasing their confidence! This week we continue building on The Lion King – with Nicoleta Charchaci playing Simba, alongside Amalia Enea playing Nala. These Year 8 girls have bounds of energy, so this is one to look out for!

Lots of different departments are getting involved, making props and masks in preparation for the show. Make sure you book your tickets after May Half term.
