AGFS: CREATIVES
Arts THE
3rd B
of the 4th
ack in May, the art department celebrated a student artist being
successful in the yearly London Mayor’s 4th
Plinth school’s
competition. For the third year running, AGFS took the Greenwich borough secondary prize for the plaster-cast (pictured below), sculptural piece called Perfection by Sharday (left) in Year 9.
Utilising skills learnt in lessons and applying her own idea to the sculptural form made, her idea about representation of women in the media in such high-profile campaigns as #Metoo was given the accolade of the best design within the borough.
This was no easy accomplishment as the judge of students’ entries
!
was internationally known British artist Gillian Wearing, the artist responsible for the public sculpture celebrating the work of the suffragettes which was recently unveiled in Parliament Square. Sharday said this about the day:
“I was invited to City Hall to receive my prize and warmly greeted by staff and directed to the ceremonial hall. I was called up on stage to receive my art prizes and certificates and I got a picture taken with the judges. It was a great day out and I felt proud to be the winner for AGFS.”
Students currently in Year 8 should start thinking about what they would put on the 4th
Plinth in
Trafalgar Square, in order to uphold the strong legacy of success we have enjoyed over the past three years.
CREATIVE CONSTRUCTIONS T
his term the building, repairing and gardening group have constructed prototype bird houses in cardboard, in preparation for their final pieces which they constructed in wood, sanded,
painted and will soon be placing out in the wooded area at the back of the school. The students worked hard to ensure accurate measurements and worked as teams to finish their bird houses to a high standard.
The students have also constructed labyrinth games and delicate paper beads for mother’s day gifts. The students made plant pots from recycled paper and sowed a variety of seeds in preparation for a bottle garden activity and have most recently been working on props for the end of term school musical.
As well as a myriad of making, the group have also been superb ambassadors for AGFS in welcoming and teaching two different groups of children from a local primary school. The students ran stations of experiments and taught the primary school children how to carry them out. They all showed patience, politeness and fellowship towards the younger students and were incredibly articulate and positive during Q&A sessions with the primary students asking them about life at secondary school.
