- a thriving holiday destination for all W

ith its meandering river, quaint cobbled streets and manicured gardens, this historic maritime town has

long since been a special holiday destination. Attract- ing not only new visitors each year, but also returning customers who flood back for their annual ‘dose of Dartmouth’, one thing is for sure… the town has a mul- ti-generational appeal, never failing to impress - whatever the season! Award-winning Coast & Country Cottages has over

400 self-catering holiday homes exclusively in Dartmouth, Salcombe and the surrounding South Devon countryside. Since becoming part of the Sykes Holiday Cottages family in 2018, the agency has been experiencing record demand for hol- iday homes in Dartmouth and across the region, with a massive 49% more bookings taken in 2019 so far, than the same period in 2018. DARTMOUTH

Combined with the heatwave of 2018 and expectations of another summer of sunshine in 2019, Coast & Country Cottages feel that this has been a contributing factor to the growth in South Devon holidays. Another factor encouraging growth in UK holidays,

Dartmouth and the surrounding area?

utes a large proportion of this booking increase to their new tools and marketing reach since becoming part of a national agency. However, statistics from the 2019 ‘Staycation Index’ by Sykes Cottages confirm that demand for UK staycations is surging, both in Dartmouth and the rest of the country. Jon Doyle, Coast & Country Cottages Managing Director says ‘We are delighted to see the popularity of Dartmouth as a holiday destination is as strong as ever. The tourism industry is vitally important to so many businesses locally and we are so pleased to see that South Devon, in particular Dartmouth, is continuing to thrive.’ Reflecting on the UK holiday market in 2018, the

Sykes Staycation Index shows that the average Brit is now expected to take up to three UK holidays per year. 66% of Brits holidayed in the UK in 2018, which is an increase of 10% from 2017. Highlighting an impact on consumer travel plans, 1 in 4

participants of the Staycation Index said that the prospect of Brexit has encouraged them to holiday in the UK in 2019.

So, what makes a holiday home eye-catching to those planning their breaks in

which may have a more long term effect, is the grow- ing awareness of the environmental impact of holidays abroad. 20% of customers said they wanted to book more sustainable holidays in 2019 and 33% said that being greener is one of their 2019 resolutions. Giving an insight into the demographic of holiday makers, Sykes Holiday Cottages bookings across the UK in 2018 were made up of 41% couples, 27% adult groups and 16% families. Not only are people looking for week long holidays during the summer months, but increasingly customers, particularly larger groups, are planning short breaks and out of season holidays to enjoy the delights of the area during the shoulder months. In the Dartmouth area alone, Coast & Country Cottages welcomed 22% more guests from Janu- ary to May 2019, than in the same period

in 2018, showing a vast increase in guests outside of the peak summer holiday period. Arguably a huge part of Dartmouth’s charm is its all-

year-round season, with plenty to do come rain or shine. The variety of events throughout the year, the wonderful choice of restaurants and cafés, not to mention the quaint shops and individual boutiques, all combine to create a destination that is perpetually attractive. Due to booking trends showing that customers now

like to secure their holiday further in advance, in January 2019 the agency launched a 24-month availability struc- ture. Customers planning ahead are now able to book up to two years in advance of their holiday – this initiative has seen particular success in Dartmouth, as customers start to plan holidays around the Mayflower 400 celebra- tions in 2020.
