OF DARTMOUTH

THE NEWMAN FAMILY, OWNERS OF BLACKPOOL SANDS, BLACKPOOL GARDENS AND MANAGERS OF START POINT LIGHTHOUSE.

F

or centuries the Newman family has been associated with Dartmouth, whether that’s in

connection with merchant shipping, or land ownership. The current generation of the well-established family, Sir Geoffrey, his wife Mary and son Robert are working hard to protect our beautiful coastline, rid beaches of plastic and bring vintage music back to the big stage! Blackpool Sands has been hailed a

‘must visit’ beach by national news- papers, magazines, locals, tourists and celebrities. In an Area of Out-

standing Natural Beauty the golden crescent beach is sheltered from the wind thanks to the forest backdrop of evergreens and pines. This Blue Flag designated beach is visited by thousands of people every year who come to swim and sunbathe in the summer (lifeguards are on duty July to September) and to enjoy a warming cup of coffee after walking their dogs in winter (in a pop up dog café). Sir Geoffrey says it’s a pleasure to look after Blackpool Sands: “It’s our

home, our back garden and like your own home we want it to look good for visitors”. Geoffrey’s son Robert, who also

lives a stone’s throw away, is pleased with the two minute beach clean initiative started by his sister Fran: “Anyone can grab a picker and a bag - you walk one minute in one direction, and one minute in the other, picking up what you can on the way. Then you take a photo to record the evidence, before you bin or recycle what you’ve collected. Everyone has been enjoying it, especially children.” What attractions are there at the beach? There is a bathing raft to swim to once the Lifeguards are on duty, sand pits for children to create impressive sandcastles, a shop and the famous Venus Café serving organic local produce with a strong emphasis on sustain- able packaging. There are five of these cafés across the Westcountry
