YORKVILLE KIWANIS - YORKTOBERFEST Anyone who had the good fortune to attend the 2018

Yorktoberfest with its beer, good food and entertainment knows that the Kiwanis Club of Yorkville has come back to life.

Although it had been disbanded for a while because of dwindling membership, in 2017 it was reorganized and now has 21 members, according to its president, Stephanie Baumwell of Old Second National Bank. She added that the group is open to anybody who wants to give back to the community and do projects that help kids and their families. An international organization, Kiwanis is dedicated

to improving the lives of children by such things as fighting hunger, improving literacy and offering guidance. Tis mission, Stephanie says, is why she was attracted to joining Kiwanis.

“I just really have a passion for helping kids and this seemed like a good fit.” Vice president Jason Pesola of Pesola Media Group said that he also likes the helping children goal, and that all the money raised by the non-profit is distributed locally. “Once I heard that it was a club that if you put effort into fundraising, it wasn’t being sent across the planet, I was in,” Jason said. When the Yorkville Kiwanis partnered with the

24

Yorkville Parks and Recreation Dept. to hold its first Yorktoberfest in 2018, the day of pumpkin carving, hay rides, beer tents, food and entertainment raised $2,500 that Kiwanis gave out in three scholarships to help students pay college tuitions. Jason says 2019’s event will be even better. Te group meets the first Monday of each month, and also has a social meeting the third Tursday of each month at the Law Office Pub.
