QUARTERLY ECONOMIC SURVEY There is still time to take part in the Chamber’s Quarterly Economic Survey for Q2 2019, with businesses having until 10 June to have their say. The survey only takes around five minutes to
complete and for those that are unaware, it is the biggest business survey of its kind in the East Midlands. The results provided by Chamber members
are crucial as they are then analysed by the Chamber in order to help shape crucial policy discussions locally, regionally and nationally – giving you a unique chance to have your say and influence the areas of business that matter to you. Results can also be used by members to gain
a competitive edge through the latest knowledge on how their local markets are faring. The results of the Chamber’s QES for
Training and qualifications are part of a comprehensive International Trade offering from the Chamber
INTERNATIONAL TRADE The theme of June’s Business Network is centred on International Trade and it has been interesting to read from contributors of this edition as to how we, as a region that is already well known for our ability to make things and sell them overseas, can go about exporting even more. These are uncertain times in many respects
but, while there are clearly challenges, there is still a lot of untapped potential with regards to businesses here in the East Midlands going global and what comes across in this edition is that the support is definitely out there for ambitious companies. One avenue of support for businesses across
the East Midlands – no matter whether you are looking into the possibilities of trading overseas for the first time or are an established importer and/or exporter – is through the Chamber. The Chamber has an expert, experienced and dedicated International Trade team which can

DISABILITY CONFIDENT I am delighted that East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire) has gained Disability Confident status. It is absolutely imperative that businesses take
advantage of a wide pool of talent and that any potential barriers to employment are removed. Having already secured level 2 in the
Government-led scheme last year, the Chamber has now been formally recognised as a Disability Confident Leader, the highest grade obtainable. Disability Confident is an excellent and
extremely important scheme as it specifically supports employers to make the most of the talents of disabled people – both in terms of those currently in a business’s workforce and
those looking to recruit. Having achieved Disability Confident Leader status, the Chamber has demonstrated that it meets all the necessary criteria of the scheme and is taking action to recruit, retain and support disabled people.
EMPLOYABILITY AND SKILLS SUMMIT The 2019 Employability and Skills Summit takes place next month, on 9 July. The summit is always an extremely valuable, engaging and productive meeting of business, education and key influencers and decision-makers and this year promises to be no different. Skills is an area of immense importance and
one the Chamber plays a leading role in to ensure the skills gap that many sectors face is closed, the link between education and business is strengthened and that the opportunity for those in and out of employment to develop skills is maximised to help secure a happy, productive and engaged workforce both now and well into the future. As ever, the Employability and Skills Summit -
which this year is kindly hosted by Loughborough University and headline sponsored by RDS Global – includes a jam- packed and topical agenda with keynote speakers, panel discussions and workshops. More information on this important event can be found on p67.
HS2 HS2 has been in the news recently and it was pleasing to see Ian Morgan, the Chamber’s Chair of the Board of Directors, pen an open letter which set out clearly how positive an impact HS2 can have on our region and why the Chamber will continue to champion it. Phase Two of HS2 has the potential to be truly
transformational to the East Midlands in a great number of ways, and not just in and around the proposed station hub at Toton. Given the already uncertain climate, I would
urge decision makers to confirm categorically as soon as possible that the decision to press ahead with Phase Two of HS2 is set in stone so that the region and its businesses can set their minds to maximising its potential.
